I had the fan belt(though it does not drive the fan) replaced as part of a service on my fiat ducato based motorhome before going away, on the return fortunately close to home a grinding/rattling noise started coming from the engine. I have located the noise to the pulley which I think may be the waterpump. I believe the belt to be too tight which has caused the damage to the bearings etc after driving only 2000 miles, there is no give whatsoever in the belt. its a 2.5 turbo diesel. do you believe I may be correct and what can I do about it?
thanks
Anthony

you should be able to twist belt 90º in the middle of its longest side

thanks for the reply. I cant twist it anywhere close to that, the garage that replaced the belt came to see for themselves after I called them but of course denied the belt was too tight saying that the short distance between pulleys made the belt seem tighter than required. they confirmed that the waterpump is the origin of the noise and requires 3 hours work to replace.
what is it about garages that so many are cowboys?

some time back I had exactly the same thing ; water pump belt was past it's best and a tiny bit loose ; fitted a new belt and tensioned it exactly by the book ...water pump bearings then failed ...it seemed that as soon as the new belt put the correct tension on the bearings they failed because they were already on the way out

at least you are not in andorra like I was , I supposed I went 1000 miles before mine failed

don't know what your garage will charge for a pump , ask them then try one of the specialists like europarts for a quote on the pump
