Technical Exhaust Smell

Hi, was driving through town yesterday and all was fine, drove through some roadworks and smelt tar and another dodgy smell, got onto the motorway and the dodgy smell was still with me, its like a burning smell, so got home and looked around the car for the smell, seems to be coming from the exhaust and it really does STINK, the car is driving the same as it always has so I have no idea what it is. Any help appreciated.

Also forgot to add, my cat rattles a bit as when I touch the accelerator I can hear it rattling quite loudly

Might not be the cat thats rattly, might be the heat shields that have come loose, allowing the exhaust to start melting the, bitumin based, underseal.

Have a look to check.
