Good morning. My boys 1200 Punto (old one) broke last week. He told me that it lost power and 'fur' came out the tailpipe. I guess he saw the remains of a silencer or cat. The cat melted when his mum tried bring the car to me so had to be relayed. I've fitted a new cat but it wont hardly fire. It sounds like its running on two cylinders. Any ideas?

Probably is running on two cylinders (which would explain the fubared CAT).

Try the old trick first:

Remove the air filter housing so you can see the plug leads, open bonnet, in the dark start the engine, look for blue flashes. If blue flashes, replace the leads. If no blue flashes, replace the spark plugs.

If the problem persists, find out which plugs are wet and petrol smelling, note down which cylinders they belong to, and get back to us.

On second thoughts I may drag it to the garage as I don't have much time at the moment. Transporter with 2 days of welding left to do and complete overhaul of my old corndog.
Plus,its freezing out there :(

Anyone know of a early Punto expert who could possibly answer a few questions if I called them?

Hi all. Just been up to take a look at the Punto. It has a good spark,fuel and a new cat. It now makes little effort to fire. I swapped 2 HT leads around and it nearly started but then went dead again. I've now put the leads back where they were. I may not have mentioned that Im a heavy plant engineer so ECUs Cats etc... are new to me :)
Not sure what to look at next.

I'd replace the plug leads (they're very much consumable items) see what happens. 1 and 4 go to one coil, 2 and 3 to the other (where cylinder 1 is the one at the timing end, 4 nearest the gearbox).

If you can get it running, borrow an infra red thermometer from work, engine cold, point it at the exhaust manifold stubs where they exit the head -- misfiring cylinders will heat up much more slowly than "good" ones. Or you can look at the plugs -- bad ones will stink of petrol and be damp. If you can work out which cylinders are not firing, you may find they coincide with a duff coil.
 
Thanks for that. The internet search pointed at these items but got too confusing giving the values of output on modules and stuff. :) I'll get a set of leads delivered tomorrow and see how I go. Also noticed (he didn't tell me) that the rear brakes are no longer present :)

Cylinders and shoes Im guessing. Need it to be good for your childs first motor.

there is numbers on the coil pack housing telling you where the leads should go.

but if in doubt, they go like this (ignore that the engine isn't the same exactly, thats a turbo cinq but same engine really)

had a mk2 punto which ran on two cylinders cuz of bad ecu, how do u know that spark plugs need to be changed just cuz u dont see any flashes inside?

Can you please write in English, rather than text speak? If people whose first language isn't English can make the effort, I'm damn sure you can. This is an international forum, FCS.

If it's not the HT leads (which are much more likely to fail than any other ignition component), it's worthwhile trying changing the plugs -- they're cheap.

You then proceed -- if the misfire is still there -- to work out which plugs are not firing, and so on. Start with cheap bits, work up to expensive ones.

There is a damn fine guide to diagnosing ignition related ECU faults in the Guides.
