Maybe we've all seen these MR2 people dropping in V6s. I would really like to investigate the possibilities of such a swap for my '86 Bertone. Here's the thing- in California, to make such a swap legal, the new engine must come from the same make as the one being replaced. So, what are the options for a Fiat, if any? Let's have some fun!

What are the options for a V6 swap on a Bertone? What I mean is, are there any Fiat V6 engines out there?

Hi Jon,

It has been done, not with a Fiar V6 but an Alfa 3.2 cloverleaf

Nick from p1x-2000 over here in the UK has done a couple of conversions (his first one got written off by a german van driver).

Here is a link to his website, http://www.p1x-2000.co.uk/ If you contact him he might be able to give you some pointers on the conversion. From what I remember him telling me it is a lot of work, the rear inner suspension mounts need to me moved outwards and alfa hubs are used

rachaeljf on the XWeb forum has had the conversion done, might be worth contacting her also (http://xwebforums.org/showthread.php?p=30402)

There is a lot of surgery involved in getting the V6 into the car, there are many other options which are probably just as much fun without such drastic cutting:-

Uno Turbo engine is a popular conversion but you would need to get hold of one and that's difficult enough on this side of the pond (guide here:- http://laursen-online.dk/x1-9/service-uk/engineconv-ut.html )

A Honda B16a engine has also been fitted with a good writeup here http://autox19.com/b16/

Hope this helps

Cheers

The only "FIAT" V6 I can come up with is the Ferrari Dino engine. It was used in the Lancia Stratos and most important, in the FIAT Dino, so maybe you can convince someone that it's a FIAT engine...:D
But you're unlikely to find one of those...

Given Fiat own Chrysler these days I don't think there would be a problem getting hold of a V6...

The real question though is why would you want a V6 in there? The benefits of torque are prety much lost against the extra weight and the need for completely redesigning the rear suspension.

I know it has been done before and to reasonably good effect but it is not simple or cheap and fairly easy to get badly wrong

I live in California, USA. The only LEGAL engine swap allowed for a street registered vehicle has to stay within makes. Example: the MR2 people are usually using a Camry engine. So, what would keep it OK for Cali?

Looking at the list above - a Fiat Dino, 130 or a Croma would do. I doubt you'd find a croma but a 130 is possible and not necessarily going to break the bank while a Fiat Dino is likely to have you hung by those that believe cars should be kept original - they are few and far between to start with so unless you can find a wrecked example I can't see too many offering one up. On the upside it is the same engine used in other Dino's of the same era and used in the Lancia Stratos so a little bit of a white lie over the origin might solve the problem.

All that said I think the 130 V6 might be even rarer than a Fiat Dino so either way you are in for a pretty tough hunt to find an example.
