General engine swap

General engine swap

Sometimes they pop up in classifieds. Usually it's a matter of taking the list with you around a few scrap yards. It's much easier than messing about on the bay. Like I say, you want late ones, with the spring.
97-02 Bravo/a 1.9TD 100 and 1.8 Punto GT 97-99 Marea 1.6 estate Marea 1.8, 1.9TD 100 so im looking for front and back calipers from any of them cars ya ill b of to some scrap yards sometime next week for a look so i dont get riped of any idear of max price for the lot

I found some new ones! These guys list them at £54 each new. You want FIAT Marea 1.9 Deisel TD (inc weekend). Part nos BCA2468 and 2469.
think ill still go to a scrap yard and see if i can get any cheaper should i only look for the 1.9deisel td there or all i listed and thanks for all your help mate

iv had a look at the Compomotive MOs very nice but cost a bit much £275 second hand not 4 me not at that price anyway will any 14 or 15s do

Look for the lot. If you're lucky the calipers will be with the disks, so you can see if they're vented or not.

While the rear disks are cute, they really don't add anything to braking performance, and are trickier to fit.
so could just keep what i have on there now then:) save me abit

15s will rob a bit of acceleration from you, even though I'm sure that the 1.4 will make up for that, they also make handling a bit more difficult even though grip is improved.

14s are the best compromise and in my opinion look the best without looking too big. 15s are also more difficult to fit, and may require your arches being done. But if you can afford then no probs :)

Not putting you down or anything, because i am pretty much in the same boat as you ..

But you don't seem to have enough knowledge to do this engine change and you don't know what it will involve for someone else to do it...

This could be way too expensive to what u imagine ...... And the 2 cases ARC listen emma and kritip engine change are done by themselves, therefore it wasn't costly and they both know what they are doing...

If you are not willing to pay £275 for second hand Mo's wheels, then how can u justify paying thousands of pounds for an engine change ?

The money u will end some spending on this engine chanage, u might as well buy a more poweful car.

IF you are not willing to do the engine change, u better off paying someone to drop the 1242 8v in for you, reason being:

may not have high power gain, but someone pointed out it gives good driving experienece

Uses existing ECU, so no need aftermarket ECU or mapping needed!! (setting the car up is extremely expensive!! if done by someone else)

Fingers said somewhere, is 60 to 0 that counts!!!!!!!!!!!

MUCH MUCH MUCH cheaper.

I did tell you! In theory there's no reason not to run with the standard 1.4 ECU, but it's easier and cheaper to grab more performance with an aftermarket one.

Emerald costs around £550 quid, plus rolling road time, Megasquirt maybe £400, depending on build it yourself or ready built.

I've already said all the stuff about wheels (and there's the FAQ). £275 for MOs is bloody cheap if they have decent tyres on them.

iv been thinking and i might buy that 1.2cinq in the classifieds and keep the 1 i have now and tri and play around with it and keep it as a long projet car that will end up with the 1.4 with a lot of help from all of you

See how it goes: remember that everyone here started off knowing absolutely nothing. Very few people here trained as mechanics. These are cheap little cars, so doing expensive stuff to them really only becomes practicable if you do a lot of the work yourself, but it's all possible.

A subscription to Practical Performance Car (and a Haynes manual) would be a good starter.

Have fun!

Engine £400-450
Gearbox (if you use it) - £175
Engine managment - £280 (self build and mapped) -> £thousands
Exhaust Manifold - £260 min (new)
Custom exhaust (you can't fit an off the shelf on) - £300 min
Suspension - £60 (springs only), £200-300 for a full kit
Brakes - £90 minimum for the full front setup

Plus there are LOADS of other bits needed, like fluid, adapters, etc. These all add up to a fair old chunk. £100-200 probably.

MIMIMUM total of that is £1665, and that doesn't inculde wheels, and stuff to fit the wheels etc. The more realistic figure is well over 2K.

You may get a few bargains etc, but thats a rough ball park figure. You will pay a fair bit for all that work to be carried out as well.

@fingers regarding stock ECU - You COULD do it, but you have to think about the ABS sensors, airbag sensors, converting the pedal int the car to fly by wire, a VERY different wiring scheme, code issues, and then the fact you end up with an ecu you can't tune easily.

I ran the 1.2 16v on the sei mpi ecu for a while, and it went ok, could probably run the 1.4 as well lol.

No offence, but this seems like another dreamers thread, you need to do a lot more reading about everything needed and involved ;)
