Technical Engine revs stay up between gear changes

Hi all, on my modest little punto 1242 cc mk2, the engine revs stay up for a few seconds between gear changes. It's not a major problem but the gear changes are not as smooth as i would like them to be as a result. Any ideas anyone?

Over time oil vapor from the breather pipe leaves gunge on the throttle butterfly and it sticks or is slower to snap shut
