I'm just about to take the cylinder head off "her indoors Cinq" as it's running rough as a dog and has no compression on number 4 cylinder. I'm expecting it has either blown a head gasket or eaten an valve. The tappets have also rattled for a while now so I intend to sort those out whilst I am at it.

The local Fiat dealerships are an absolute waste of time so I was wondering if there were any mail order online places that people could recomend to get the necessary parts from.

The car is a 1994 Cinq with a 899cc engine that has done 70,000miles and this will be the first engine type trouble that we have had with it. We have owned the car from new.

Factors are a good source of bits...that and a good machine shop should help if yure just doing the head gasket...nothing too major!!

Rattly tappets may be harder to solve though......

Thanks for the replies so far (y) and the welcome (y)

You can probably tell from the username that I'm into Mini's myself so rebuilt a few A-series engines in my time. I use a machine shop close to where I live and they are generally very good so no problems if the Cinq head needs a skim. It will be the weekend before I can get the Cinq in the garage as there is a mini in there at the moment and I'm not into fixing cars out in the cold.

matty2004uk - I'll let you know if it's terminal and I need an engine. Worst case scenario is it's dropped a valve and holed a piston. If is that the case then it will be cheaper to drop a engine in.

Tony.......can ask the motor factors near me if you want as they are always very good at getting anything....and give me a discount !!! (y)

What do you need ??

Ay up Carla and Grey (y)

Well upon taking off the rocket cover i was presented with this
cinqhead.jpg

Notice the exhaust rocker on number 3 cylinder has jumped out of the push rod and the clip that holds the tappet in has dissapeared together with the shim, resulting in the tappet being loose :bang: managed to find the shim but the clip has long gone :yuck:

Anyway I took the head off, the gasket had not blown but number 4 exhaust valve is badly burnt.

Just working out now what I need to get it all fixed

I decided not to go the scrappers route for the tappets as they could be as bad as the ones I'm taking out

I've got the hydraulic tappets from http://www.ricambio.co.uk/ , I can't recommend them enough, ordered at lunchtime and parts arrived next day, now thats what I call service :D

The head has been to the machine shop for a skim and valves and valve seats re-cut. I'll be putting it all back together this weekend (y)
