Hi guys, new owner of a Fiat 500 "Rockstar" here!

Got a quick question regarding the dualogic model, am I meant to put it into Neutral before turning off the car? Or just leave it in "Drive" (1)

No, as advised in the handbook you should be leaving it in 1st or Reverse when you switch it off.

I then place the lever in Neutral once off so its in the correct place when the engine next starts up :)

Is that what you do? Interesting.
I just leave it in gear and when I start it up i pull the lever down to engage 1st gear.

Yeah, I haven't read the handbook. Can anyone else comment to confirm what's the "correct" way to do it and confirm the below happens to them too.

When you pull up and; leave it in gear 1 then switch off.
It's all good then when you start the car it says gear 1 but immediately turns to N when it's ignites

When you pull up and; put it in N then switch off.
The car beeps at you and flashes "N" on the screen.

Well in the Panda if you do as you say it beeps when you start it until you place the lever in Neutral or select 1st, although I suspect the 500 is like the Bravo where it doesn't beep on start up if you do as you say, but its a habit thats stuck from our Panda :)

The correct way is how I have said, you leave it in 1st or Reverse. If you don't believe me then read your handbook! :bang:

Maybe you should, :), here is the relevant bit direct from the 500 Dualogic supplement.

ENGINE STARTING
The system permits engine start-up with a
gear engaged and also with the gearbox in
neutral (N); the brake pedal must always
be pressed first.
It is advisable to place the gear lever in
neutral (N) before starting the engine.
After start-up:
❒the gearbox automatically engages neutral (N)
❒the lever remains in the same position
as the last time the engine was turned
off
❒the display shows the letter (N) and,
when the brake pedal is released, an
acoustic signal indicates any inconsistency between the lever position and
the gear engaged
❒the gears that can be engaged are 1st,
2nd or reverse (R).
IMPORTANT If start-up is requested with
the gearbox is a position other than Nand
without the brake pedal pressed, the display shows a dedicated message see
(“Warning lights and messages” paragraph). In this case, repeat the start-up manoeuvre, pressing the brake pedal.

I just leave it in gear and when I start it up i pull the lever down to engage 1st gear.

Interesting, I'll have to try that next time. I usually do what MEP does, shift it to neutral as I'm starting the car, then shift to gear.

I must admit, Fiat did not tell me about that quirk of the Dual Logic box so the other half was getting worried when switching the engine off after putting it in N and that horrible buzzer... but now we have viewed the supplement it makes sense to leave it in gear then place in N either when you switch off or before starting up again.

Dav1ey, could you please stop posting in red text? Different coloured text is there to help people highlight text in posts, not for whole posts.

As a potential purchaser of a 500 dualogic (I have not driven one yet), I find this interesting reading.

So - this gearbox doesn't operate like a regular auto box does?

I read on Autocar's review that " this unit doesn’t creep forward when you engage ‘D’: it picks up drive only when you press the throttle. It also refuses to engage at all unless you’ve got your foot on the brake"

I don't understand the latter half of that about putting your foot on the break - is he simply referring to having to put your foot on the brake to move from "park" to "drive"? That's the usual way of things isn't it?

Dont worry about the specifics you'll figure it out when you get the car!
It doesnt have park or drive just +/-, N, R. Leaving it in the middle of +/- is the equivalent of 'drive' and when you park the car you leave it in 'drive'.

I've just got a 500 Dualogic and can't recommend it enough for anyone thinking of getting one! I don't understand why auto's aren't more popular?

Just wondering why it has to be left in gear when parked and not into N like my Citroen sensodrive or a manual for that matter? The fact it beeps loudly at you if left in N makes you think you're doing damage to the car?

It seems odd that you have to leave it in gear to park, when you have to place it back into N to start?

Placing the car in gear before switching it off is a safety precaution in case the handbrake fails. Not sure about the Neutral thing when the car starts, hopefully someone else more technically apt can answer that one.

Agreed that the beeping thing is pretty silly, but then I never expected an Italian designed car to have much usability/UX anyway :D

Ahmett, I don't think that is what stops people specifying it on their cars, even if it is true.

I'm not sure it is true either. Yours is the only Dualogic to have problems that we have seen on the Forum in recent years, I think?

TBH robin most people on this forum with dualogics shift away theirs after three years so its too young to have problems = ) I am talking long term say 5-6 years into ownership.

And this is the same with Auto boxes in General, like VW DSG's, if they go wrong much more expensive to fix than manuals due to their complexity.
