I have an L reg Punto SX75. When the car is first started after a long period of just sitting there (ie in the morning and coming home from work) and when (Is suspect) the throttle is engaged I can hear a fairly loud "dry" sounding noise coming from the bonnet (possible driver's side). Once the car has been running for a few minutes the sound stops. Could there be something wrong with the throttle? Or could this be something else?

Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated.

Andy

Could it be the alternator bearings? I'm undsure, but my old Seicento did this! I sprayed WD40 in it and it stopped for a bit :D

Symptoms sound a wee bit like a defective Cam Belt Tensioner - but the sound you normally get (I got it and others have mentioned the same) is more of a 'squeal'. It usually happens when it's cold (first thing in the morning) and goes away after about a mile. It gradually gets worse.

Here come da judge...

I had a nasty "squeal", turned out to be the water pump. It was always worse from cold. I managed to find a brand-new water pump on ebay, £13 in. delivery! Bargain! Not sure about a "dry" noise though. Do you mean a scraping sound?

Thanks for the advice guys! it gives me some places to start looking at and\or mentioning to a garage if I can't solve it.

Describing the noise is hard. The best I could explain it as is "dry" as there's no rattle or spluttering, just a fairly constant noise that can be heard above the normal engine noise. This does disappear after a few minutes of driving.

I do have a squeal from the car when I first turn the ignition on, I assumed this was probably a belt slipping. Could these two be linked?

When starting up my car after standing a day or so it would make a quite funny noise, dry would maybe be the fitting word as Catonic sais. Anyway, it disepeard after 40.000 miles service, at the service I also changed the cam belt so I dont know what fixed it.
