Hi all, my Daughters 500 failed the MOT today on the rear drum backing plates being corroded and holed. Search as i might i can not find these as a spare part. Can anyone steer me in the right direction.

Probably dealer only, not Motor Factors:(
Anything off ePER at top of page?
Otherwise the scrapyards may have them.:)

Maybe I'm missing something 🤔?
Google has some results and also looking like a Ka part.
Depending on the year of the 500.
Hi Jock

Its not as simple as it sounds, you are correct, the KA and the Panda appear to have the same back plate BUT to buy them from the Stealer they want £182 for the pair. Scrap yards only sell complete hub assemblies and to make it that little bit more trick there appears to be slightly different versions, the piston fixing holes are in different locations. And as Bugsy pointed out motor factors do not sell them.

I am sure i will sort something out eventually but i bet I have spent 10 hrs looking into this. Need to get my drum stripped to identify the type of piston fixing plate i have and go from there.

To add insult to injury in europe you can buy the plate assembly inclusive of shoes etc ready built for about £60 the pair BUT, and i know its stupid apparently they dont fit RHD cars ?????????

I work out which brake system is fitted

Then find the part number first

Buying new online you might have to be careful I suspect left hand drive vehicles are different, there is a warning on some adverts,

Pretty sure lockheed/Delphi and Bosch/bendix back plates are different which does yours have

Not a common failure, what's the rest like inside

There is a list is on here and you can search via VIN

This is the same Bosch back plate as a panda upto 2009 then it was changed to the Delphi system some 500 have Delphi

Doesn't fit later pandas, I suspect it might be similar for the 500

Thank you for the details, I have some homework to do still I guess. Changing the cam belt was easier than this 🤣🤣

Pop the drums off and take a photo of the adjuster

Bosch and Delphi are quite different looking

Not a common failure

No point in ordering the back plate only to find it requires something else inside

Much cheaper to buy brake assemblies if needed

If does require just the back plate I would be tempted in second hand as for a bit of steel they appear to be expensive at £160 a pair

Not a common failure
May be becoming more common.
Never had one before this winter, then had a 10-plate Panda Active with holes in both and a 58-plate 1.2 with a hole in one side, bad enough for a brake shoe mounting pin to pull through.
I've started grabbing the whole units (backplate, shoes, wheel cylinder, drum) off any scrap Pandas and 500s i come across.
Strangely, best ones seem to be from 04 to 57 plate Pandas, later ones generally seem to be rustier.
Maybe they cut down on the paint?

i guess it is a time related thing. i live right on the coast in Cornwall so probably hasn't helped at all. Once i sort the plates out (and shoes etc) i will give them some extra protection. Same goes for the rear subframe. Even looking at the items the breakers are selling i do wonder how long they would last.

Would be wise to look at your plates now and get some protection on them.

Good information and interesting

2009 is when they changed to Delphi on the panda

Which has a different back plate and shoe hold down pin design

Just a guess it's manly the Delphi ones that's corroding but the 58-plate seems to go against this

My older panders with Bosch brakes weren't looked after, they went a scabby but remained very solid, both 200K miles

Salt air isn't going to help

Easier way to identify which system is installed

The drums if needed are identical in size

This secondhand Lockheed assembly is £35 on eBay which is cheaper than buying just the back plate

Thanks mate, i suspect i am Lockheed, silly question but what was your search wording on ebay to find the complete assembly like that ?

ford ka rear brake assembly

In Google images and then clicked on an image

It my understanding Bosch up to 25/05/2010 then Lockheed, but I could be wrong, it's also not unknown for what is available to be fitted by some manufacturers, but i have never had a problem with fiat.

The 1.2 brake parts are shared Punto, ka, 500, panda

Thanks Koalar, it will be interesting to see what i have as my car is 2011.

I've got a couple of 2010 Active ECOs here at the moment and they are both Bosch, so changeover date may have been a bit flexible in normal Fiat fashion. Checked the build date on one of them and its March 2010.
The other has a slightly lower VIN so could be 2009, haven't checked yet.*
I used to be able to get pre-assembled Bosch-type units from a company in France including back plates, but they seem to have disappeared since Brexit.
Would be nice to find a source again if they are still out there.
I don't remember there being a LHD/RHD choice, just ABS/Non-ABS. Apparently ABS was standard on the base model in the UK earlier than Europe.

*just checked, its November 2009.
