Right i havent got a clue how to remove them it looks like they will pry out the gearbox but its like there bolted in or held in some way they will not budge can anyone help also how to replace a gear selector cable :confused:

the driveshafts have a snap ring on the end of them which lock them into the gearbox.

not bolted or anything,

just requires a long pry bar and some force... usually not something easily done when laying under the car as you cant easily get enough force behind it or a long enough bar... easy for garages, because its on a ramp, they stand underneath, get a long bar thats mayb 2ft long and can put more force behind it.

Actually better not to disturb the snap rings if possible, because once you do, your supposed to replace them, otherwise you run the possible risk of the driveshaft popping out the gearbox

usually easier to undo the driveshaft gaitor and pull the driveshaft out of the cv joint on the gearbox end.. being carefull not to let the bearings fall off and remembering where the bearings inserted into the socket.

It might sound stupid, but if you have to remove like the above

You'd be silly not to spend an extra hour or 2, to clean the whole cup bearings and shaft end with some Gunk Cleaner or similar
And replace with some nice clean fresh grease as its a good thing to replace it now and then :)

All you need is a decent chisel and a club hammer. There is a slight knack to getting them out cleanly. Whack the inner end of the shaft firmly with the hammer and chisel and the shaft will normally release about 10mm. Re-position yourself again and hit the shaft as hard as you can. It should now pop right out. If you don't do it like that the snap-ring gets stuck halfway out. As long as you get it out cleanly you don't need to worry about new circlips.

precisely, lol
I know that CV joints/driveshafts are normally considered maintenance free apart from the odd gaitor splitting.

but greese degrades and doesnt last forever.. so a good clean and regrease every 50k miles or so doesnt hurt... just extends the life of the bearings in the driveshaft.
