problem with a 1992 uno 60 1108cc buzbox!

Does this car have a history of head gasket problems? If so is it an easy DIY job? I am fairly compitant with me spanners but have been driving company cars for some time and havent had to get my hands dirty.

Problem is getting very hot quickly and losing lots of water. Only paid 50 squid for it but it is tidy except for its thirst.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Hi, welcome to the forum.

The 1108 fire engine is prone to head gasket failure, yes. You could change it yourself - best go for an uprated Spesso gasket - but you won't know if the head needs skimming or whatever until it's apart.

I did an FAQ a while back,

if it helps at all.

without sounding too thick is it a fairly st8 forward job? as well as gasket do I need head bolts? Is it likely that the head will need skimming? Is a new head expensive? not too many questions, what?

Best assume head will need a slight skim, it shouldn't cost that much.
I've only had to do this once and the job was pretty straight forward. The old head bolts were re-used and I ran the car for another 50,000 miles without any problems. If you want to be sure you can change head bolts as when we were tighting these up to the final angle there is a lot of strain involved...

Hei.

What's skimming?

Just to update yousall
Swapped plugs, leads, Dissy cap and rotor arm + did head gasket(not too difficult even for a bonehead like me).
Head gasket was gone (just) but major problem was the inlet manifold gasket.
Car starts like a dream.

BUT

Over heating like a pig.(sweaty pig at that!)

Answer NEVER trust a GARAGE that's after your money. So changed Thermostat and bingo no overheating no ruff running all is good.

Nothing fancy just a good 1992 Uno for total price of £145.00 inc buying car and all parts and bacon sandwich for me mate with the torque wrench.

"Fart In A Tin", for £140 I'll fart in the rain.

Just one silly little bug bear, Is the gear linkage sloppy on all uno's or just mine?? Is it an Easy fix? Who cares I can find 1st and Reverse.

Cheers for all the help (so far!!)
