Just watched the start of this and wondered if anybody is watching (channel 4).

So far I have heard the following from the leaders of the anti-asylum centre in their area:

They could easily attack the oil refinery...erm, yeah.....![)]
"It doesn't take a genius to knock out the power supply to Swanick (the airtraffic control system)"....hmmm, those silly electrical engineers didn't think about backups and backup backups....?!
[Looking at an asylum seeker in the window of a hotel] "Who would want them in their neighbourhood??"

A 50 year old lady: "I am scared of rape, STIs/STDs and aids"

One lady (the only one so far to understand the needs of asylum seekers who was complaining at a man for sticking a anti-asylum seeker outside her house) spoke out to a man who said "shoot em, i don't care, kill 'em, born in that situation, leave 'em in it"

They then went ahead to say that they are a risk to everyone. Come on, why are asylum seekers any different to others? A couple of guys on that road had been attacked for having pro-asylum seeker feelings.

"We will be raped and mugged"

The woman basically said something I completely agree with:

"If we were to have a civil war tomorrow, i would beg for a country to take me to help me and give me refuge"

I don't want to start an argument, just want your comments on the above. I want to know why people can lack so much compassion towards fellow human beings? I can understand more mild feelings towards it, but i believe the above (directly quoted) is far too harsh?

Paul
P.s. I ask this because this is one of the most important questions within our country right now.

Hmm, Asylum seekers. My opinion is:

Provided Britain does not have an unemployment problem, which we don't (meaning there are jobs available) I don't mind letting such people in provided:

After a couple of months with our benefits they find a job. I think after that they should get no help or benefits. It's crazy to continue letting people claim benefits indefinately while they do nothing. Also

People the foreign office decide are illegal immigrants should be deported. Immediately. It is crazy to give such people benefits and legal aid until they dissappear into the black economy.

"The new rules are very simple, the FIA will keep them to themselves until such a time as Ferrari needs them" Patrick Head

Agree with what Dr Pepper says - the current system of making asylum seekers stay on benefits and not be allowed to work until their claims are settled is just daft as I'm sure many of them would like to contribute to scociety but simply aren't allowed to.

Exactly, and then we complain when they are forced to work illegally! How can we argue to not give them anything and then prevent them from work, hmmm, doesn't exactly make sense!

My brother works at Swanwick :)

It's about a 10 minute drive from me :)

And where was this oil refinery??

Sorry for the poor spelling, just my best effort at a word you rarely see written down!

The program was based on a centre in a place called "lee on solent" and they seemed to look over to a huge oil refinery accross what I guess was the solent (?) after a short drive. I don't know how far this place is from Swanwick but they did make that comment so it must be fairly close otherwise it would be a stupid comment to make?

Is the oil refinery by any chance on an island or something? They said something about it being a short boat ride?

Just checked, apparently the largest oil refinery in the world is nearby. Does Fawley ring a bell?
