I take it theres a few of you with digital cameras on here, so i just wondered what you would say is a decent no of mega pixels to make a good photo? also,, would i need to plug it into the computer or can you get separate printers that dont work from the comp.. cause my comps so old and raggerty that the leads don't fit no more cause they tooooo modern.
Tank u kindly!

Really? God thats good.. see, the way they explain it in the catalogues, you have to have atleast 3million megapixels for the pic to get to a decent size..

What about printing? do i have to run it through the cranky old comp?!

Thanks Pete thats really helpful!:)

We (*) have a Fuji FinePix A204 which also goes to 2M pixels. The file size for the full resolution is about 400k (for a JPEG).

All the pictures on the Forum were taken with this!

I have no trouble processing the images on my trusty old 450MHz workhorse computer.

It all depends what you want - a camera that does the job or something to show off to your friends!

The photos i post on here are always in the lowest setting on mine which is 640x480 = 0.3 million pixels this is more than enough quality for me

I have considerably more mods, THAN YOU!

I have a Kodak 2.2 megapixel cam. Retails dirt cheap, has a girly docking station lol.. but it's good for charging it up. I love it.. Heres wot it takes:

I recently bought one whilst in Tenerife. 2mega pixels and 3x OPTICAL zoom. I also bought a card reader to put the puics on my pc, its soooooo quick.

There are new printers on the market which allow you to slot your media card straight into the printer rather than through your pc. The printer can then give you an index print and print individual pics off. I remember seeing one for around £130 but couldnt give any advice on the quality of the stuff produced on it

All depends how old your motherboard is and if it is USB compatible. If not, I would upgrade as most peripherals now connect via USB (and its a hell of a lot faster than a parrallel port.

It depends alot on your budget and what you want to do with the camera. Obviously, the more you pay the more (and better) features you get and the higher the number of pixels. If you want to be able to enlarge pictures, then the resolution becomes important.

If you want to take pictures and enlarge them, eg passport sized photo enlarged to A4, then you need a very high resolution - I'd say > 5 Mega Pixels.

If you're enlarging 'normal' 6x4 prints to A4, say, then 3-5 MP would suffice.

If you're taking snap-shots for posting on the web then 2 or 3 MP would be fine. You would probably get away with less, but I guarantee, after a while you will want a better quality image because you will be using the camera all the time.

The camera we have is 4MP and has many good features, but it cost us >£450. Plus Ruth (the missus) enlarges many of her photos and we have them hung on the walls (she's quite serious about her hobby). When I take a photo for posting on the web, I usually leave the camera on it's highest quality setting and reduce the image size in Photoshop, before compressing and hosting. File size is approx 1.5mb each. (Unedited.)

The camera comes with USB leads, but we don't use them anymore. We bought a USB card reader and access the Compact Flash card directly, as you would a floppy disc or CD - just drag and drop the image files.

Where was the photo taken, Digimod? I'm sure it's in Grimsby (obviously) but where?
