Diesel sales to end by 2022

Looks like fiat is going to stop selling all Disel cars by 2022
Wonder what they plan to do for there vans however? Because petrol engines just don't work in vans and I really don't see electric power being viable anytime soon unless they make some sort of electric motor and a petrol generator to give it a power source

I could actually see petrol electric hybrids being quite popular for commercials tbh, all that floor space is prime real estate for a big flat battery!

It’s a shame, it also puts fiat in a difficult position as one of the world’s largest manufacturers they virtually no electric car development or technology to fall back on.

From an purely environmental perspective, it’s much easier to clean up the emissions from diesel and problems tend to be localised, where as the higher C02 emissions of petrol cars are a much harder problem to deal with and and are a global issue

It's probably simple economics, how much will it cost to make our current "euro 6.1" compliant cars actually euro 6 compliant in use...colour that with the knowledge it's going to be banned in a lot of cities in the relatively near future and your core market is City cars and take the view it's not worth spending millions on keeping a zombie technology shuffling along.

Unfortunately once diesel is done petrol will follow shortly after but the lighter weight does make it a more viable option for hybrids and range extenders.
