Hi All,

My Fiat Ducato Self Converted Camper van has just started smoking on initial start up but clears after approximately 10 seconds, the exhaust fumes are all white smoke and smells of un burnt diesel. Runs and drives as normal just the initial start up when cold. Engine also starts straight away from the first turn of the key so its not from excessive cranking to get it started

Graph taken on tick over then increased the revs a couple of times to 1500 to 2000rpm. Injectors 2,3 &4 all stayed in the negative yet Injector 1 was always in the positive

Can anyone tell me if this is normal or is this the cause of the white smoke on initial start up?

PS - I have already posted this in the Ducato section but got no response so thought I would try it in here to get more views and suggestions/thoughts

Thanks in advance

Carl

I Have'nt a clue which engine you have but it looks like no.1 injector is playing silly buggers. try swapping it with another cylinder and see if the fault moves.

It's the 2.3 engine which is the same as the Iveco Daily engine, Didn't want to have to swap the injector round if I could help it as they don't have the copper seals on them and I've heard they can be a real pig to get them to seal again

I was hoping someone had had this issue before or could say for sure that the injector is goosed

Only other way to confirm the injector is goosed would be to do an injector leak off test so may put a post on to see if anyone on the forum near me had a test kit I could borrow

Thanks anyway
Carl

I would check the glow plugs 1st.. as that's the most common cause of unburnt fuel on start-up.. = the compression will get a COLD cylinder going once the good cylinders have fired, and the engine revs properly.., ;)

Obviously a dodgy injector would leak by / misfire constantly..,

when was the graph taken ?,

at what coolant temp..??, Charlie

Hi Charlie

Thanks for your thoughts/input

The graph was taken with the camper sat on my drive, coolant temp would have been cold as I had only just started the engine and started the recording straight away of the injector correction values

So where's the best place to start testing the glow plugs, I take it some of the glow plugs are working as the van doesn't struggle to start & starts first time
