I am starting to think of replacing the Marea for something bigger and heavier, we want a bigger caravan and the marea just cant cut it. I'm looking at Fiat Croma, Citroen C5 Peugeot 407, But the horror stories of the Anti pollution device failures on the Pug and Citroen are enough to leave me very nervous to say the least:eek:, knowing that Fiat like to use Pug engines now dose anyone know if the engine in the Croma has anything like this:confused:

As far as I know (whatever that's worth) FIAT have never used Peugeot diesels. Ford use some, but FIAT actually supply Vauxhall/Opel. The Croma could well be a good used bet as because it hasn't taken off in terms of sales and has since been withdrawn from sale in the U.K. except for special order. They are still on sale elsewhere so parts and servicing in this country won't be
a problem. Because it's no longer on sale here depreciation will be bad so they
will be a great buy 2nd hand.
Same engine as new Bravo and Alfa 159 in 120 & and 150 bhp versions.
Peugeot/Citroen 1.9 diesels and FIAT 1.9s are not quite the same size, one being 1910 cc and the other 1929 cc. Can't remember which is which though plus, Peugeot/Citroen don't use the 1.9 in medium to large cars anymore.
Just something to bear in mind is that the original Croma was the first car to have a direct injection diesel in the'80s and common rail injection now used by
most manufacturers was invented by FIAT

The joint venture commercials and MPVs from Fiat and PSA mostly use PSA diesel engines. The major exception is the new Fiorino, which uses the Fiat 1.3 JTD while it's French sisters use the PSA 1.4. Also, there's a Fiat 2.3 JTD available in the Ducato that is not available in the French versions. Actually, the 2.3 JTD could be made by an outside supplier like VM, who made 2.4 and 2.5 diesels used in various Fiats and Alfas plus a number of other cars about 10-15 years ago.

The New Croma uses existing Fiat 1.9 and 2.4 JTD engines. Another possibility is the Alfa 159, especially with the 210 HP version of the 2.4 JTD :). You can get this as a car or an estate and even with 4WD on the estate. Should give you enough pulling power.

the ulysse is a joint venture with peugeot and citroen, and as such uses the peugeot diesel, but its the only car in the fiat line up that does(y)

dont worry about the DPF horror stories, the same is true for all modern deisles with a DPF, as longas it is driver correctly (hard) it will be fine, but worst case scenario you need to get it regenerated once a year, nothing to worry about.

its a big problem on the alfas, some poeple (old men who drive slow) are having anightmare and need to have the DPF regenerated regularly, in some cases every few thousand miles.

it is long distance at low rpm that casues the prolbme because the DPF cant get hot enough to burn the soot. drop it down to 4th for 20 mins and it'll get nice and hot, regenerating itself. do that on every long motorway trip and it'll be fine.

So what is the point of an anti pollution device that needs to produce more pollution to work properly:mad: the whole thing stinks :bang:

the DFP burns soot into ash, it is not designed to affect any other emissions. it does that job well, but to keep it hot you need to drive in a way that uses more fuel, creating more emissions. its a funny old world.

Just how much are we talking about to get a regenaration?
the DPF should regenerate itself, if it is not able to you will need to visit a dealership who will then force the DPF to heat up to 600C to burn the soot. for that they usually charge approx £70.

:) £70 phew thats ok, was expecting a lot more. Is it the same thing that happens to a Citroen? CPU runs car at 4000rpm and then injects extra fuel causing exhaust to heat up? Apparently makes gas coming out of exhaust so hot it has been known to melt things (like cars parked behind)

yes thats right. on some cars it regenerates itself using a fuel injector, unfortunately alfa dont use that method.

on the plus side, you wont have your car setting on fire, as has actually happened on some cars that regenerate using a fuel injector (usually setting grass on fire beneath the car)

I might just look for a croma then. Or a Euro class 3 that is on the heavy side such as Nissan Primara or Mk1 Citroen C5, that way there is no Particulate filter to worry about.

my 51 plate punto jtd hit 150,000 miles on the way to work this morning, only thing ive ever had to do to my engine is routine oil/filters/cambelt and tensioners as per maintenance schedule. I checked the shims (valve clearances) over easter, and they are perfect. The engine is sweeter than when i bought the car, and it definately pulls better than then too. JTD engines are stonking!

I do like the JTD, I have the 105bhp JTD in my Marea weekend, it has a lovely sporty throaty sound to it for a diesel, and it is lovely and smooth. Mine is on 118.000 miles.(y)

Yes the croma has a max tow weight of 1500kg, that is for all models perfect for what I need.

My short list is

Croma
C5
Primara
BMW 320d
Saab 93
Octavia 4x4
407
