Here's my dilemma ...

I love my 1.8 modified Stilo and I want to modify it more.
I am supposed to be showing it on stands at Trax this year but I can never afford to get the more major jobs done like alloys and springs etc, because my insurance is through the roof and is only going to get higher as it gets prettier.

I have to drive 22 miles to and from work every day and ofcourse tax is rather high for this car too. It is all costing me crazy amounts each month.
I AM NOT getting rid of the stilo (don't panic) and like I say, I intend to get it ready for trax but there must be a cheaper way.

I was thinking of getting a cheap run about so it's better on fuel, tax and insurance. But this leaves me with my dilemma...

What do I do about the Stilo?
If I get show-insurance, I don't believe you can drive it on the roads? in which case how do I get it places?
I can't afford to tax and insure both.
If I get the 1-day insurance, most you have to be 25 and no mods. Even if I could get it, it might cost a fortune.

I don't understand how people can afford nice cars and keep them on the road :(

HELP!!!
Suggestions please

Who are you insured with, as people like Sky and Adrian Flux are specialist with modified cars and usually even give an extra 10% discount to car club members. I had my last two cars insured via Sky, both heavily modified and both very reasonably.

Hey, I have looked into them but looking at reviews etc, I get the impression that Adrian Flux are a bit notorious for not paying out if you do have an accident. This may just be a bad few that I've read and honestly, I'd love to be told otherwise because they are loads cheaper.

Why should modded cars cost more to insure?
It doesn't make me a worse driver, surely?

I think it is some sort of equation that they work out to tell them if the car will be more likely to be stolen, or you are more likely to drive it differently and therefore become a risk. I would argue that somebody who spends all their money on modding a car may be more careful than somebody who gets a company car given to them, for example, but hey, what do I know?
Flux are very good for modded cars, but they are very steep if you pay obn installments. Their finance charge is more in keeping with Dick Turpin than insurance companies!

Depending on your age you can get temporary insurance under 25. A lot of places offer 21 and up temporary insurance, a few offer to 18 and up providing you've been driving 12 months.
Also you could add the Stilo to the other cheaper running cars insurance just for a month (or a day if your insurer let you).

Maybe because they can afford it and realistically arent punching above their weight, which at this moment in time from the opening post you appear to be

You could always tow it to shows, personally id sell it and get your money situation sorted out, then go to TRAX with something else in a year or twos time

This car is turning into a money pit for you, not cos its a shed and needs repairing, but because you cant simply afford its upkeep

Take out a policy, tax car. Cancel policy within "cooling off period", buy temporary cover for Trax, cash in tax and SORN once show season over Job done...

But don't do that with Adrian Flux as they have some of the most draconian 1st year cancellation fees of any insurer seem to remember a bloke with a 200 odd quid policy cancelling in the 1st few months got about 12 quid back.

That and as Dave was saying they cross check tax and insurance databases these days, so just keeping it out the way is not enough, if its taxed but not insured you'll get threatening letters from the dvla initially possibly followed by someone turning up to impound and crush the car..

:yeahthat:.

My understanding of the current rules is that there's no way out of keeping it insured for the season if you want to do the show circuit, short of trailering it everywhere.

Once you and the car get older, insuring it can be amusingly cheap - I've just been quoted less than sixty quid for a 12 month 3000 mile fully comp policy on my Lanchester :). No road tax to pay or MOT to worry about either - it's tax & MOT exempt :):).
