Technical Crankshaft pulley / Cambelt

Hi, I am in process of replacing the cam/timing belt on my 1.6 16VPalio (2003 model). I was wondering whether there is a special tool required or method to hold the crankshaft in place to loosen the nut on the crankshaft pulley as I need to remove the pulley to replace the belt.

Any thoughts/guidance will be much appreciated.

You must be doing something wrong, because there is no need to unbolt this pulley when changing the belt....!!

I'll take a photo of where the cambelt goes round the crankshaft pulley. There is a flange/metal cover right next to the belt and approx 1mm from the crankshaft pulley so I can't slip the cambelt around the pulley for the waterpump/alternator/aircon belts.

Here is a picture of the crank pulley (alternator/waterpump/aircon belts) on the left, cambelt (still in tact) and the flange (red arrow) that prevents the cambelt from being removed without removing the crank pulley.

Well, I have a 1999 model, and didn't have the problems like you are facing..!
Anyway, yes there are special FIAT tools to hold the crankshaft in place, maybe ask at a FIAT dealership to borrow them..?

You should be able, from underneath the car, to remove a cover over the flywheel on the other end of the engine, then carefully find a way to restrain the flywheel. I've seen mechanics here in Brazil just jam a steel bar in one tooth of the starter gear to stop it turning, but I would make something in wood to engage a few teeth, to prevent breakage. Hope this helps....
