I’m still stuck—I had another four can of premium petrol, there’s a chance I didn’t completely bleed it out, and I feel really stupid because of that, but I bled it till empty and I filled an empty Jerry can

It started to turn over a little bit when I first tried it, but now it just won’t get above 300 RPM
Slow down

Are we saying it's starting on petrol

But will not rev past 300 RPM or crank past 300

Sorry — it’s on petrol

Cranking but will not go past 300

I’m wondering if it might be battery after all-I seem to be able to get it to start and then die after a few seconds the first time I try it on a given day — I know the battery is only charged for like two or four hours, and it been going out for a long time

I know I need a new one anyway any recommendation for battery?

That very well sounds like a discharged battery behavior.
Battery recommendation, this one:
It's very very good.

Why assume? You need to be sure.
As it is now you can try pushing a little bit the throttle pedal in that split second when it starts and before it dies. That should keep the engine running. If so, it is the battery. But you need to check the battery anyway. At least read the voltage on it, with a multimeter.

If you resolve the battery issue and then revisit. Can i ask you say 300 revs, is that engine actually running or is that actually cranking speed only. I would imagine if it had actually fired up you would have spoken about the engine smoking with all the diesel burning off so i suspect its just cranking speed.

Have you put new plugs in it or at least cleaned the plugs off with a blow torch/heat gun as the diesel will still be coating them.

I am not sure what we are talking about it should crank at 300 rpm, no idea why you would need a new battery

Are we saying it fires the first time you try it, dies then will not restart

It dies then will not start

Yes i agree, in cranking it will be capped at 300 and will not go faster until it starts. So we can conlude crank sensor pickup is working. Once battery is resolved I would check for the spark(use an old plug earthed using maybe a jump lead and placed somewhere you can see it when you turn the key to attempt to start.

Then return to the fuel, i suspect you have fuel trying to get through the injectors and may not yet be the best clean jet of fuel yet until its probably close but there will still be plenty of diesel oil in the cylinders really messing with your fuel mix/compression. You may have to just go for new plugs to give you the best chance.

There may be some good suggestions of ways of cleaning up some of the diesel from within the cylinders but as its not clear the overall condition/age of the engine i wouldnt like to make any suggestions at this point.

That is the latest report, yes.

It's possible but unlikely to be the actual fuel itself

The fuel ignites easy, so should work as a vapour

It was nearly empty when it topped up from a jerry can

It ran for a further mile

A small amount of fuel percentage wise will not stop the car running

It now been emptied and four cans of good fuel

It runs on easy start, we probably don't need to look at the ignition

I also found clumps of something covered in oil on the tip of the breather opening next to the solenoid coming from the rocker cover.
Not sure I understand what we are describing here

At this point, I could only get it to turn over (before cutting off seconds later) if it had been left for some time (hours).

I assume the battery is now flat

That is the latest report, yes.

I know what been written

There seems to be mixing between

Cranking
And
Firing

Cranking turning over weerweer sound

Firing, engine running

Or is it both cranking and stopping
Running and stopping

Is the oil light on at ignition on
Is the battery light on at ignition on
Is the engine check light on at ignition on
Is the immobiliser off at ignition on

Does the battery and oil stay on when you start to crank

Whoo

Missed this is this on the rev counter, are you sure this is correct

"would say it goes to about 500 then 300 rpm"

500 rpm is way faster than normal on a standard size battery especially if it been cranking a bit, possibly low compression from a slipped timing belt
