hi
i've had a browse of the forums and seen a couple of similar problems, but wondered if anyone had any ideas before i take my '99 60sx into the garage for a diagnosis... (and potential rip off!)

starting it up the other morning, the car coughed a lot, but thought it was damp, however after an hour of running/warming the engine, the problem was still the same. it got to about 2k revs then started coughing.

called the AA man (twice, as same prob happened 2 days later, as we thought it was fixed the 1st time) and he tested spark plugs & leads and couldn't see a problem. it was like it was mis-firing. so he suggested taking it the AA-recommended garage (which i will on tuesday).

took it out today, and it drove a little better, but when getting upto about 60mph/3000 revs, it wouldn't accelerate any more. it doesn't cough as much today, but you can still feel the problem is still there.

cheers!

I AGREE WITH KEBAB THE LAST POSTER..IT IS HARD TO SAY....but the coils do go....and you may need to look at the lambada sensor(oxegen sensor)..located on the manifold outlet pipe...the bit of exaust that comes from the engine..they are prone to pack in and alter your mixture.....but my best bet will be your sensor located at the bottom of your crank..ie..at the bottom of your cambelt...this is a hall sensor and tells the engine tdc and advances the spark to compensate for timing of the ignition....they do pack in also..but they do get bits sticking to them...unbolt it(10mm) and unplug the wires(2 off) and give it a clean.....you never know....it may be your throttle positioning sensor....the bit that tells the engine where your throttle plate is.....but have a look around for unsecure wires and any shafing of wires..even pull connectors off and check for water ingress(WD40 SPRAY THE CONNECTORS)...anything that makes intermittant contact can have this effect you have described..it will cost you nothing to take an hour looking around..and might save you a bundle...and disconnect you car battery it will reset all lerned faults..as faits just hold a few anyway..but remember your audio system ..have you got the code...and dont leave your car keys in the car.....saves you posting"how do i get into my car".. :)

i appreciate the post thank you, will give the car a look over tomorrow :)

ok, it's back from the garage and the problem was:

"fault located to a fault crank shaft sensor and the bottom pulley is also damaged and needs replacing. ignition trace is poor and new HT leads will need to be fitted to rectify misfire"

costings were:
£45 - diagnostic check and testing
£28.19 - HT leads
£58.07 - crank shaft sensor
£83.25 - cranks shaft pulley
£70 - labour
+ vat

hope that helps anyone out with similar problems!
