Hey dudes,

Basically after reading the other post its made me post this one...
I have been offered some 17" stilo alloys for my car for free from my mrs when she gets her new car (shes selling her 206 and getting my mates V reg 1.8 hlx in broom yellow :) he is selling it due to him getting an alfa 147)
Anyway, she doesn't like the wheels and has asked me to swap them with mine, which I got from Dan Hearn which can be seen in the pics in the other post (I'm keeping them in the family Dan, so I can make sure she looks after them ;) )
What I want to know is, what size are the tyres Dan so I can work out how much my speedo will be out (although they are not the same type they are the same size) and peoples opinions of whether or not I should get them. I've asked a few local people off of cruise-stamford and they are all saying "do it, do it!" but I don't think their point of view is valid as they all drive novas and chav mobiles ;) lol
I really enjoy being able to beat cars I shouldn't in its current state :) (remapped ecu etc) but I like the arch filling look of the 17's on my mates bravo. Also, do you think that the grip will worsen going from 15" to 17"? I felt a great increase when I went up from 14" to 15" but reading the other post it doesn't seem to be the case?
grrrr don't know what to do, help!!!

Cheers,

Dan

(sorry for the stupidly long post!)

Dan – I don't think you'll regret going to 17's mate – you will again feel an increase in grip, from 15” to 17” – the lower profile tyre means less roll which means the car is more stable – you'll feel like you're glued to the road at first :) and as you've mentioned – the look of them filling the arches is spot on!

My tyre size is different to the recommended size for the Stilo – I'm on 205/40/17 tyres.

Which Stilo wheels are they? I've seen a pic of a Broom yellow one on the 5 spokes? Really smart - is this the one?

I forgot that you've had yours remapped – I'm thinking of getting this done – I just want to feel a bit extra power – did you notice a big difference when you got yours done? (sorry to go a little off topic)

as anyone that has had it done will tell you, yes it did make a big difference.
much more pull in 3rd and 4th. Hitting nearly 80 in 3rd (wouldn't do it all the time tho ;) )
Just thinking whether I will undo this by putting 17"s on tho.

Oh, and they are the 5 spoke split rims :)
If I can get a pic of them I'll do a photoshop :)
it is quick tho tom, much more torque in 4th compared to the 1.6 but it seems to beat me on every other aspect :( oh well, its a 1.2 what more can I ask for :)

a working 1.6 ;)
Don't worry, I'll Fix Smee's car the next time he comes up to my neck of the woods, isn't that right sweetie ;)

The 1.6 isn't renowned for its torque :)

A chap I knew had a cammed and chipped 1.4, claimed to be putting out 100BHP or thereabouts. It was quick and would out run my 1.6 until I got over 3500 RPM at which point the 1.6 had the edge and would catch up.

His MPG was dire though!!!

am i the only one who thinks the car is slower and has leww grip on 17's????

i just swapped my 17's for 15's, and the steering is better, grip is improved, and i'm not sure, but it possibly accelerates faster.

cos its wet. when its dry u will have buckets of grip

In the wet my 16" have a bit less grip than my old 14", same type of tyre too.

I need to lower the car really.

wasnt some 1 sellin spring for 50 squid tom. u not interested

@Smee. I live in Scotland. its wet here more than its dry. so i guess grip in the wet is important. never had probs in the dry. and i didn't have probs in the wet with steel wheels either

Well... its the tyres that make the difference.... Tryed many different types in my time... 17 different cars in 4 years... various different tyre makes...

The last boots i tryed were Perrili P500's Dargo's ... have a 2cm groove in the middle... suppose to help cut throught the water.. helping grip in the wet by dispercing the water quicker....

Great idea... but they are scatty.. and don't fill me with much confidences in the damp, wet or dry.. so there a NO NO....

Best tryes ive tryed are Bridgestone...

Worse are TOYO's....

Its worth spending a bit more than normal on tyres.. go for a Brand you kno, and check out reviews.

Remeber the tyres are the only ppoint of contact you have on the road.. so make it a good one.. or u'll be having fun keeping it goign where you point it.

Some indepent garages will push a certain make, as thats what they make the most money on. Big retailers don't really care cos they make money on all tyres they sell.

What tryes does every1 else run?? Any comments welcome??
