Hi
does anyone know the difference between a 126 and 500 clutch pressure plate?
I have fitted my 500L flywheel to my D engine and also have the 500L flywheel housing on a 126 gearbox.
With it all in place it would appear that the lever has too be pulled a long way before the clutch release bearing touches the pressure plate.

is the 500 pressure plate deeper than the 126?

I found my answer
500 - 3.7cm
126 - 3.1cm

looks like I will be taking it apart again - grrr

Sean, make sure you use the F/L thrust bearing with the L pressure plate, if you use a 126 thrust bearing it won't fit - as I found out after starting the engine and trying to engage gear :mad::mad:  all you get is a terrible screeching noise and the engine will slow :mad: You will find that the friction plate for the F/L won't fit the 126 pressure plate :mad: see post 184 in "704 Hot engine" thread.

I ended up changing the pressure plate to a 500L one.
The lever movement was very excessive and the spring was almost at full tension by the time the release bearing engaged with the pressure plate.
I didn’t try the 125 bearing.
Never gave it a thought as I had a new 500 bearing.
All seems to be fine now.
Maybe the 126 is narrower due to the flywheel being thicker than the 500 flywheel

Thanks Sean,

That’s useful to know. I’m using a 126 block and gearbox, but want to use the 500L flywheel, so I’ll be trying the 500L clutch and release bearing and seeing how I get on!

Regards
Lori

I used a 500 flywheel, with a 126 clutch and release bearing on my 650 engine, along with a synchro (126) gearbox. I never had a clutch problem BUT, as I have mentioned before, you will probably find that the starter 'misses' occasionally. The 500 flywheel is thinner that the 126 version and does not stand away from the flywheel as much. I just lived with it---you learn to let the stater settle and try again!

Tom, did you try changing the starter pinion gear?
Although I think the 126 starter motors may have a larger bearing on the pinion gear?

Mind you I am using a F/L flywheel housing on a 126 gearbox so that might make a difference?

You're sorted now anyway and the car is looking great. But I think Tony Vitesse and me did some early "discovering" on this when restoring our cars. Matched 126 clutch components all worked well when I had the 110F engine fitted.

I vaguely remember it was a long time ago!:D I did have problems with the release bearing when I was putting the 650 engine back together. The bearing wouldn’t move along the shaft as the bearing ‘wings’ were too wide to fit in the actuating arm to allow any forward movement along the shaft. I think it was a new 126 bearing?

You'll mean this then?:) Back in 2014. It looks like we both used the original 500 release bearings although I'm sure I would have remembered then having an unused, brand new part lying about....knowledge of my stocks is one thing I am good at.:D Maybe the actuating levers 126 vs 500 are different?

Well that one as well but I also had the same problem with the 650 engine. A new bearing that didn’t fit. It’s down to those additional little angled wings that cause the problem. Looking at Axel Gerstl they sell a clutch kit with the winged bearing that they list as ‘Complete clutch: thrust bearing/thrust plate/clutch disc Fiat 500 R/126/126P (500 F/L)’. But they also list a separate bearing for the 500F/L that looks different but looks correct. So we probably both trusted what was on the website and bought the kit with the wrong bearing! I know I bought the kit for sure probably for both engines.:bang:
