Clunking noise and other problems!

I have posted before about this problem with my punto but never really got a definate answer.

At low speed or when stationary, and the wheel is turned, there is a loud clunking that sounds like a spring expanding and contracting, and the odd banging noise, when jacking up the car the other day, i heard the same noise as the car was raising from the floor, which i know is normal, but leads me to believe that it must be something to do with the spring itself, as its only coming from the passenger side. What could be the problem??

Also, for the past few months i have had a leak from my gearbox, it seems to be coming from where the driveshaft goes into the box, where the rubber sleeve thing goes on, now i have no idea what the part is causing the problem here, and how it is fixed, so any advice would be great! Although there has been a leak for a while, i have regularly been topping up the oil to ensure it doesnt get too low, but when changing down gears , and i enter 2nd from a higher gear, if the revs are over 3k then there is a loud grinding noise, the same that would happen you missed a gear and released the clutch in the middle of a gear change, again i am clueless, so any help as to what the problem is and the fix would be great

Thanks

Approximate prices on the fix would be great too thanks!

Sounds like the suspension spring has broken, These tend to go at the end.Se if you can shine a torch up and see the upper end

ok thanks, what am i looking for, a crack or something similar??
When the car was jacked up i checked for moevement in the wheel and there was nothing irregular so the ball joints are still ok!

The sound you are describing it will be a complete break. sometimes it's hard to spot because the spring tends to settle in its original place but if it is the spring there will be a mark where it is broken

thanks mate, i think il take it to the garage cos that sounds like it could be rather dangerous!

Its not ideal anyway. Could just be a knackered ball-joint. Again, not ideal, and will seriously affect your handling and steering control.

lol, is it that one on the drive furry??
Does it have MOT and the like??
How much u after for it?

aye mate lol got 11 months mot out of tax though (shame) looking at 300ono neg as it is just sat there

just taken the wheels off both sides and had it on axle stands. When turning the wheel, it seems that the spring is jumping and moving as the wheel is turned, making the clunking noise, there are no visible cracks in the spring tho, what could it be?

check all your bushes

pic to help, this was on my brava before i got new everything!!

Marea, why settle for less

thanks for the input guys, especially for the diagrams, but the clunking noise is definately coming from the spring jumping slightly when the wheel is turned!
Any ideas?

If you definite about the noise coming from the spring, it could be the mounting plate at the top. Check the bearing as well, all rubber components. It will mean dismantling the suspension leg

ye i thought it could be something about the top bit that you can see and adjust in the engine bay. It is definately the spring thats making the noise. I wouldnt like to play with the suspension so il take it to a garage.
thanks!

Also any one got any ideas about the grinding in 2nd gear as described at the top?

Have you checked the inner gaiters on drive shaft? could be the boot is leaking,:2nd gear grinding is probably adjustment

I've been having loud creaking noises from both sides and clunking when going over kerbs.

I looked into it and the clunking was my anti-roll bar rubbers (someone had put 9 screws in it!) so I replaced them.

The loud creaking I fixed with a pot of grease.
Sound silly but the rubber mounts on the top of the spring (under plastic cover in bonnet) and the underside (under wheel arch) were dried out and when turning would make the springs creak and was sending vibrations down making the creaking noise.

It is still there now and again but didn't fully grease it up at the time. Much quieter now, and will get some spray grease this week and fire that in.

Don't know if that will help ya chap but mine was the dry rubber mounts.
