My 16v 1.2 2000 year Punto has began making 5 clicks on the clutch as its pressed down & the same 5 on the way up. They are very small clicks and cannot be heard unless not driving.

Do I need a new clutch? If so do I just ring a garage and ask for a price for a new clutch on a Punto or are there many parts to a clutch? As I'm clueless when it comes to cars!

Also how much should it cost fitted & how long does it take them to do it. Also is it a difficult job or should I take it to Fiat?

Cheers anyone who can help/advise

Just read some of the old posts on here and rang a good local garage who quoted me £250 for a new clutch fitted. I said could it just be the bearings and they said they wouldn't know without stripping it down and to do this will cost a lot anyway so I might as well have the new clutch.

If it goes when I'm going along I take it I'm stuck! Is £250 a rip off?

Thanks

Umm well my local garage prices start at £69.99 inc fitting thats for cheap little small cars punto is about £100 i think. BTW was that a dealer ? [V]

Yeah take it to a private garage if it's out of warranty. Get some quotes but it should be much less than £250.

Mind you I wouldn't replace it if it's still working ok for the moment...

Its working fine, but clicks!

So £250 is high?

Basically what happens is the release bearing wears a groove into the pressure plate. When the clutch is pressed the clicks you hear is the bearing running on the grooves on the pressure plate fingers. Easier to say than type. Fiat reconditioned clutch £40 obviously not fitted but just shows you how much is labour your paying! In time it will get worse and I have seen clutch plates break and take the gearbox with them.

Thanks for the explanation. So do I need a whole new clutch like they say? Rang a Fiat dealer earlier and they said similar about by the time they've stripped it down I may as well have a new clutch fitted....price £450!

Also is it an easy job for someone who knows what they are doing? I don't want them doing more damage!

no a whole new clutch isnt needed- mine was the same and (under warranty) they replaced the whole clutch but the clicking returned. I took it back and they have just replaced the slave cylinder and this has cured the problem.....

EVERYONE- SPRAY YOUR PUNTOS BLACK

The whole clutch meaning Pressure plate, cover and bearing(comes in a kit costing £40). The slave cylinder just pushes the clutch in a fluid motion it doesn't click. It activates the release arm. If the arm is positioned out slightly may cause a creak due to excess movement but that would be a creak rather than a series of clicks. I work on these everyday and the general manufacture of these clutches are below par. The clutches replaced under warranty are re con, some clicks reoccur some don't but still come with the same guarantee 12 months.

I had the same thing.

"Slave cylinder on clutch release fork dry. Removed clutch slave cylinder and greased ball and socket. Refitted. Test ok."

Got to go in for my second wheel bearing this week. The near-side went a couple of months ago, now the drivers side has gone.

Not sure if it's my fault (driving style etc) but that does seem a bit odd for both within a short-ish time frame (2 months).

Oh well, it'll be covered by warranty anyway....

mine was clicking also been doing it for 6 monthe put up with it then last thursday click became a crunch and had to press hard to get it passed the crunch point alittle worrying to say the least, garage said release bearings would have to strip clutch to sort it. well i have done my car done 50k so figured bugger it will put new clutch in cost me £180 fitted from Mr clutch :) they done it next day.

well i dint realise how bad my old clutch was untill this one was put in, its sooo different the pedal is soo light now and travels smoothly and quietly must admit i think it was worth every penny so far. my old clutch i had to press quite hard just figured they were like that and also made noise on way down. new clucth came with 2 year warrantty could make it 3 years for extra £20 but figured i would probably sell car by then anyway. i was very happy with mr cluctch service they gave me some milages to pop back in to get it rechecked and adjusted if required f(ree of course) after 500 miles then 3k 6k and 12k miles to make sure its working perfectly.

may be bale to find one cheape they were first person i phoned up and was happy with price. my dad just had his uno done there that was only£120
