Hi all, I'm a proud owner of a 97 broom yellow cinq. I'm looking for info on ways to increase the speed for little or no cost really.
I owned one 10 years ago as my first car and fell in love with the little gem. I needed a little runner so convinced the wife to let me have another one, she has to drive it on the odd occasion, she's not so keen but she's nows how much I love the little things. So last year I purchased my second one with 21k on the clock from good old eBay. Other than a new battery and thermostat it's been brilliant. I'm currently doing some new wheels for it so hope to have some pics up soon for you all, so just looking to see if I can mod the performance in expensively?

Sounds like a plan, the new wheels are actually 15", I work next door to a part worn tyre garage and the guy had a set of enkei Mazda 5 spoke wheels laying around. I was amazed to find they had the 70mm centre that are so had to find and sold them to me for £20. Thanks for the info I will be looking this

erm, centre bore on a cento is 58.1mm not 70mm.

Also an mx5 has a centre bore of 67.1mm or 54.1mm dependent of age

On top of which fiat pcd is 4x98 whereas an mx5 will be 4x100 (doable with wobbly bolts) or 5x114.3 (no doable at all).

And then further still, it will be epicly slow on 15s unless you turbo it or drop in a 1.4 16v engine. Having just done a 1.2 16v conversion on mine i wouldn't want 15s on that either, just not enough oomph IMO for 15s.

Wheels are a bargin at £20 though, should make some money if you sell them on at least.

But... Welcome to FF!! Always good to have another cento'er aboard (y)

there is quite a bit to do , to improve performance just do not buy them "resistor" chips off ebay for 99p...

Thanks I'll steer clear, but can I steer into? Do you have a cinq? What can you suggest as specifics?

The 70mm I'm referring to as the hole centres, as a bit of a novice I believe I should have said 98, I'm getting lines mixed up! I will be having stretched tyres over the wheel to keep the profile down, I think this should help the overall size including tyre to be very similar to original alloys with the tyres fitted? I'll give you an update when I end up down the road with a wheel wedged in my arch!

MX5 is said to be 4 x 100 54.1 centre bore. Generally around 45ET.

They're nice wheels, but, given that the wheel width is OK and you can run on fairly smooth roads, I'd forget the stretching -- it's a bit silly and waste of a wheel/tyre and will attract police attention -- and go for 35 aspect ratio. This should keep the gearing (check, though, for circumference against the OE tyres). You'll have to use spacers, and these will have to hubcentric. If you have some made up you'll be able to incorporate the changes to the ET (the spacer element) the different centre bore, and by using the spacer with 8 holes, as a pcd/stud adaptor (wobble bolts are a real PITA). Just make sure that whoever turns it up knows what they're doing and uses high tensile aluminium alloy.
