are they difficult to look after? does anyone have any?

We had one but she carked it earlier this year. Wife was devestated - she had her about 13 years.

Was dead easy to look after. 25 - 30 minutes per day cleaning cage. Make sure you get some sepiolite for dust bath. Well worth the effort.

Never seen such a small animal move so fast. If you get one make sure you have plenty of open space in your house for it to charge around. Great fun to watch. Ours used to sit on my shoulder whilst I was watching TV.

Miss her now come to think of it :(

we've got one who's about 1 yera old now. his names nibbler. he has to be the cutest thing that ever lived. he curls up in his hammock and pulls the covers over to go sleep. loves raisins. they are so cheap to keep. the initial cost for the chin and cage is expensive but after that a £2 bag of food will last a month, and a £5 bag of hay will last 6 months!

you do have to let them out to get exercise for about 10-15 mins daily, and thier cage is very very easy to clean, you just slide out the bottom tray and change the newspaper. they also have to have a sand bath every day coz they like to keep clean.

heres nibbler

We had a couple given to us by a friend of the family as they couldn't keep them what with them being elderly and all and they are the 2nd best pet i've ever had (dogs obviously having to come 1st (y))

They are really easy to clean, like Alaina said, just keep them fed and watered and get a cage where the bottom slides out.

The only hard part is cleaning up all the sand when they flick it everywhere and cleaning up the poo after they have been let out to run around. Also trying to catch them to put them back in the cage is a laugh as they are so quick and if you grab them by the fur they have a defence mechanism where they can release it so it comes awway in clumps in your hand.

Well worth having though, a really good pet.

they look class, my parents used to have chinchillas but never had them since I was born :(

My sis had one until just recently. keep a very close eye on the front teeth, though my sis's had regular checkups, the front teeth can grow upwards through the jaw. Chinnies apparantly nver show pain, as its a defence mechanism for when they were in the wild, so they may not show any symptoms. my sis's had to have its 2 front teeth removed, they almost pierced the skull and a few days later, one of it's eyes literallly came loose. it went into the vets for a second operation ( both ops were done by a specialist vetinary hospital, not a general vet) and never recovered from the anaesthetic second time round. If the teeth had been picked up earlier, the outcome would have been different. This was a couple of months ago, and my sis still gets upset now and again. Her dog, an airedale terrier misses it too, was a funny sight seeing a chinny chasing a bloody big dog around (all in play i hasten to add)

Other than the tooth problem, he was an easy animal to look after, the above is just to make you aware of the tooth problem, it can happen.

I have one, William! he's become the fccuk mascot.

Things to beware of, they chew EVERYTHING, mains cables, skirting boards, doors, cupboards, the lot. If you are going to be letting him/her out, just make sure you aren't bothered at the state of the room. They need lots of toys and branches to chew to keep their teeth down.
They are nocturnal, and they dont' make very good pets for younger children. They are happier with a pal but you can have one alone if you spend time and make sure he doesn't get lonely (Will is a bit of a grump and a loner so he's fine :D )
They poo like every 5 seconds too, so a clean every few days is best. You have to be careful when you are walking around with them, as they are fast and a bit careless, I've nearly squashed will about five times already

But overall very cute, very clean and very soft  furby-esque creatures that make for a great pet. Check out www.chinchillas-unlimited for a great forum and also breeders to buy from (NEVER buy from a pet shop, pets @ home etc)

One last pic of the one they call "el chubbo" !!

Oh well, the ones i was gonna offer a home to have been re-homed elsewhere anyway.

Gorgeous pics but don't think i could have one now reading your advice. I don't think i'd like em running all over the house (my kids make enough mess without a furry addition)

I've got me rabbits and pigs i think i'll just content myself with them :D
