Yes i have always wanted to fit a cherry bomb exhaust to my car even before i had one. Now i have a Brava ELX 1.6 1997. I have looked and it has 3! mod boxes. One just coming out of the engine. One mid way and the end box. Any ideas on how much it will cost to get the tailbomb fitted. I also wanted to know can i have a straight through pipe from the engine to the tailbomb. Just any general information on what other people have done or views would be great!

CHERRY BOMBS :D

haha the good old days, do they really still make cherry bombs? havent seen one for years

as you have noticed the bravo exhaust is quite a beast. the first box on the exhaust that is closest to the engine is the cataytic converter, removing it will release a couple of bhp, but you will fail your MOT on emissions. if you want to remove it the easiest way is to get another cat from a scrapyard and cut it open, then remove the innards and weld it shut. fit it and you'll notice the difference. you need to refit the original one before every MOT but apart from that you have a cheap and easy de-cat pipe that will improve performance.

the second box isn't important, you can chop it out and replace it with a straight pipe. i did this on my 1.6 and it drove slightly worse but you can try it if you want. i wouldnt bother.

to fit the cherry bomb (or any backbox) you can simply chop the old back box off and then join the new one to the chopped pipe. its easy, but you will need to plan the mount for the backbox, best method is to weld a bracket on similar to the original one, or just get a couple of big jubilee clips and clip a bracket onto the cherry bomb. To pass an MOT the whole exhaust system must be airtight and secure.

i guess you want it really loud? cherry bombs are loud, but these days there are loads of 'straight through' back boxes that sound the same but are better quality (often stianles steel) look on ebay for universal back boxes and exhausts. there's plenty to choose form and they cost nowt.

Ok ill have a look at fitting it myself. Dont thing ill bother changing the CAT if im going to have to change it everytime i take it for an MOT! If i remove the mid box will it make it louder or no different? Also any links you have of VERY loud boxs would be great. All i need from it is to be loud and very very cheap!

ah to be young again.

removing the midbox will make bugger all difference to sound. you need a rage style exhaust, but without the rage brand prices. on ebay you'll be looking at £20 for a universal jap style 5" back box and if your neighbours dont complain with the noise i'll run naked though asda. even a 1.0 engine sounds like a V8 with one of them on.

Are they actually any good?

I was lookin at Back boxes on ebay, and noticed them bein around £30-£100.. and I thought to my self.. Eh up?!

I was thnkin about gettin one for my car when I get a new one.. Im quite happy with the sound of my stock standard one on my Cinq. Sporting ;D, But when I get a new car (I was thinkin a Ford Puma, or Fiat Bravo but its a while till I change), I want it to sound a bit mean, but not too loud!

So, just wonderin if the Ebay backboxes are any good?

Chris

All I have to say is... once you have driven a long trip (+-1700km non stop) with a custom free flow system (65mm straight through, only 2 small 30cm x 15cm boxes) on a 1.6 16v super charged PALIO will you understand why the "noise" eventually drives you mad!!!

dont do it i had a stupidly loud exhaust on my pug 106 and it drove me crazy after a while not to mention sounded ****e too get a full system its well worth the money and it will sound sooo much better!

I stuck a Rage 'ST6' twin 3" upswept (pics in my gallery) on my 1.4 and it didn't make a lot of noise. The middle box's baffles are buggered though (told me at MOT) so could this be the problem? I wanted to get Powerflow to put a pipe straight from the cat to the box for the next MOT but my insurance company wanted to triple my premium. (n)

Biding my time 'til I can put it back on.

if the middle box has broken down baffles it will be restricting exhaust gas flow, which will reduce the noise from the exhaust but more importantly it will create excess back pressure which kills performance and puts excess stress on the exhaust valves. just chop it out and replace with a piece of pipe. the insurance company wont ever know, even if you crash, do you think they have a diagram of the 1.4 exhaust to compare to, and even if they did they'll very rarely look at the car, especially if you've declared other mods already. just do it

and yes a loud exhaust gets very annoying, usually about the same time you go though puberty, but until then its great
