Hi
I have been concerned about the oil in the gearbox in my 51 plate Ducato 2.8 non turbo, after reading loads of comments, it appears that Fiat do not fit a level plug to all Ducato's and is inconsistent as to which model they do fit them to!
The only way to know for certain how much oil is in is to drain it and refill.
The manual says fill with 2.0L of oil, the forum suggests 2.4 or 2.8, I bought a 5L canister and filled with 2.5 (that leaves another change later).
I only got 1.6L out of mine, the gearchange has improved and lots of noises have disapeared.
If you remove the air filter box and induction pipe, look down at the top of the gearbox and you will see the reversing light switch, clean it and remove using a 24mm deep socket, fill via the reversing light socket with semi synthetic 75/90 gearbox oil @ £30.00 per 5L (buy a cheap plastic jug at ASDA for £1.00 to measure)

On mine you can only access the dip stick from underneath! In the past I have asked the tester to check it at MOT time when over the pit as it's a pig to get to.
p.44 of owner handbook is not very helpful:
Transaxle
'Oil level can be checked using dipstick A, accessible from under the vehicle.
The level should always be betwenn MIN and MAX.
To change the oil, remove drain plugs B and C. Let the oil drain thoroughly before putting in new oil at plug B located in the engine compartment.
The hole where plug B is located is closed by a plastic seal.
The reverse indicator D should be removed after disconnecting lead C in order to fill to the proper level.'
Spec. is listed as SAE 80/W (TUTELA ZC 80/S) (p.168)
For 2445/2500 diesel engines capacity is listed at 1.25 litres (p.166)
As I remember, with the air filter off, you can just see the dipstick, but can't get it out from above.

LWM, from your post am I right in thinking the gearbox and transaxle have seperate oils and levels??? unfortunatley my hand book is in German so cannot deduce very much from it, I didnt realise there was a dipstick on the gearbox even?? will look for it today, FF

page 67 leads to transmission page wwith gear ratios etc.
'Transaxle' is the combined gearbox and final drive - hence just one distick.
I've never been able to get to mine even if I jack the front end up though!
Maybe if you park it half up on pavement you will be able to scrawm underneath and see it - but then you can't check it in that position!
I've never changed the oil - and only dipped it once!
Maybe I should change mine...

I have now solved my gear oil dilema. My van is a mk1`1993 and takes 1.5L of gear oil. This can only be checked by replacing, drain from underneath and refil via the reverse switch. It also has seperate oil for the differential. This has a seperate dip stick, its not easy to see and is best done from underneath. I have not changed this yet as the level looks to be Ok and the oil seems clean. I will change it as soon as I can find the enthusiasm to get under the van again!
