I've got 6x9s in the parcel shelf. Its reinforced but still rattles and unless really loud the sound gets muffled by the seat backs. Loud is good, but not ALL the time and then the muffling annoys me.

A better option would be a pair of good speakers in the doors with some basics in the back to give a surround sound effect. The doors will need deeper mounts making from MDF (and painting or covering in cloth) but I'm sure well worth the effort. It has been done and posted up on FF.

I'm not sure if its in the guides or just do a search on "door speaker".

For security reasons I have a spare blank parcel shelf as well as my JBL GTO6** (cannot remember what they are) equipped parcel shelf. I removed the wiring connector from the old speakers and modified it to be used with my current speakers as a quick-fit connector. If you are in the Stoke-on-Trent area, you are welcome to borrow my parcel shelf to assess if stock wiring and parcel-shelf mounting is for you. Because of the way I have adapted the connector, you wouldn't have to change anything on your car. Since the mk1 is hardly an ideal listening environment, you may find this sufficient.

Unfortunately i'm not in the Stoke area, but I appreciate the offer :). I have basic electrical knowledge and my Dad is an electrician so we shouldn't have too many issues with the wiring side of things. So how would parcel shelf speakers usually be fitted? Would someone do a similar thing and just rewire the stock rear-door speakers to go to the new speakers in the parcel shelf?

If you are not using an amp, you may as well use the stock wiring and speakers. As for the rear speakers, are yours in the rear doors? That would seem odd to me since my speakers were in the grills either side of the parcel shelf, so running a wire from them to the parcel shelf was easy.

Of course, the best solution is to install in your doors since this will give you better sound in the front, not deafen your rear-seat passengers and improve security (my car has been broken into twice whilst parcel-shelf speakers were on display). Search this forum, there was a group buy for sound deadening material to line the doors with. For ICE, you are actually better off speaking to member 'volkstu'

Nah no amp. I honestly cannot remember where the rear speakers are. I'm assuming they would be in the same place as in your '55. I'll try and get hold of volkstu.

Would you happen to know the rough cost of respraying the front+rear bumpers?

Repaint is about £100 per bumper. But if your car has the grey or black textured finish bumpers, they wont take paint - nothing sticks to polypropylene (and its much tougher). You will have to get some body colour bumpers from a breakers and have them painted.

A rear shelf made from MDF can have the speaker holes cut out with the speakers screwed on underneath. Cover it with nylon/lycra material and the holes vanish but the sound comes through like the cloth isnt there. You can get electrical connectors for PA systems from maplin. Ideal for disconnecting the speaker cables.

But TBH I would rather spend the money on door speakers. My car came with 6x9s in the shelf and I dont get full benefit from their performance.

Hi all, only my second thread on here.

So after my MK1 55s failed the MOT catastrophically and I did most of the work on it with my dad (Exhaust, rear trailing arms, rear brake cylinders/hose/shoes, oil filter, air filter and spark plugs all replaced) I've kinda caught the virus. I'm almost addicted. I've started looking at my Punto and looking for little things I could tweak and change, whereas I had no interest beforehand.

However, I don't have a big budget, and I don't like these massively modified ones with the body kits and spoilers. I prefer more subtle, sensible things. I'm thinking of perhaps removing the plastic bumper things on the doors but that's as far as I've got. I'm thinking maybe a different steering wheel and new dials? I don't know.

Any suggestions as to modifications I can do on a relatively low budget?

Thanks :worship:
Don't remove the side moulding! You can have fun with them and try different colours with them!
Just today, I've taken off all 4 (front left & right ad rear left & right), cleaned all the excess gunk with some adhesive (took like forever though!), painted them and whacked them back on. They actually look pretty tasty! ;)
So then, I built up my courage and decided to paint the front and rear black bits (metal 'front' and 'rear' mouldings), things got a bit mucky at the end but the adhesive did it's job and I managed to clean away the excess paint. :p
I will upload some pics tomorrow evening if you want to have a look! So don't chuck 'em!

kinda doubt he's still mulling this one over after 2.5 years tbh.
You never know ;) I'm still thinking about it 2 weeks later :p by the way, a quick question for you mate; I'm looking at changing interior, I'm prepared to go all the way, taking both passenger and driver's seats out and replacing them with bucket ones (for example like the new corsa's; it must be said but those seats are one comfy fools :yum:), any suggestions or tips?
Thanks in advance anyway :)
