Technical Changing cam belt + oil seal

HI all

my cam shaft oil seal is leaking a bit so iv got a new 1 to replace it..i have a new belt also as i may aswell change that while im on...

anyway my gf's dad is competent with doing cars, get him a haines manual and away he goes... now he sed he has changed the cam belt on other cars and just used rods to keep it steady, however in the manual it says u need to buy these special rods for the punto. which is a bummer cos they £120

was just wondering has anyone else done this? is there a way to do it without getting these special tools??

Is it a 16v 1242 engine or 8v?
