hmm a question i've pondered whenever the punto has been unfit for international duty.....i'd just go for the biggest petrol motor you can find, perhaps a 530 bmw touring or a large volvo, any diesel will have a premium cos antiques dealers e.t.c. will want them, it only has to last 3 weeks so if runs when you get it it should continue for the time period as long as you use your senses when you but it, also big petrol motors especially the german variety take high mileages as well as diesels and are dirt cheap because no one wants to pay for the petrol (you will have to but only for the 3 weeks also in europe where its cheaper)...looking at auto trader a 525i SE goes for 425 with 160k on it...also unlike a diesel it'll sound good when the exhaust falls off which with a cheap car you almost guarantee in the 1st 1000 miles!

If you can find a big petrol motor with a LPG conversion it should be cheaper to run than the diesels.

Diesels sound much better than a petrol with no exhaust. Most agressive sounding engine note I've ever heard. Also the petrol may not run due to lack of back pressure. :)

i know of someone who just got shut of a P plate V6 Mondeo estate for £900 with full service history from ford

U cant go wrong with an old volvo, mis 90s astra estates are a bit cramped and not nice to drive a real long distance.

Go the whole hog and get a BMW or merc!

audi 80's are worthless!!! honest!!

buy a private one locally and stay away from ebay, a lot of cars go on there because their rubbish & at the same time horribly overpriced

theres a used bm specialist just near me, PROPER 5series (88-92) saloon's go for around £3-800 there all T&T'd and an array of engines. the diesels still fetch upto a £1k quite easy.
but remember insurance will be diabolical. and petrol is only about 5-8p a litre cheaper, unless you get a **** hot exchange rate

and for the record, a 530, does NOT count as a 'big engined car' 3litres is just abou right to move it about, but its never gonna fly with that tame L6 in there
