General Car making strange noise on tickover

I´ve noticed over the last week or so that when I pull up at a junction and the car is on idle there is a strange clunking noise coming from the engine. When I put my foot on the clutch the noise goes away.

My wife says that she can now here this noise when she starts the car too.

Any idea what this noise is and why it goes away when the clutch is pushed down.

Even the best guys here need to know the details about the car.

I would suspect the clutch diapraghm. I had a similar noise on my 1.2 at about 100k miles. The diapraghm 'fingers' were nearly worn through in places.

Sorry guys, forgot about all the other details. It is a 1.9 jtd 2003 not sure about the actual model as here in Spain they are different from those in UK.

OK Nigel I suspected that, if the car has a Dual Mass Flywheel this might be your culprit. Only stripping down will give a definitive answer I'm afraid.

Clutch or flywheel it usually makes economic sense to replace both at the same time...
