Hi all. I own a 1.9 Diesel Grande Punto, 2006.

About a week ago I had a service and cambelt change and ever since it has struggled to start. I've had to put my foot on the accelerator as I turn the key otherwise it'll just crank, once it starts though it runs perfect. When I took it to get some fuel, after filling the tank up to a little less than full it wouldn't start even if I put my foot on the accelerator, it'd just crank.

After getting towed home, I left it to sit for a couple hours and then it'll start again using the same method as above.

Today I've just changed the fuel filter as it wasn't done during the service and the car starts without me having to put my foot on the accelerator, still sounds a little jumpy but no where near what it did before. I opened the fuel cap to release the pressure without putting any fuel in and the car wouldn't start again and instead just cranks.

I think it would have something to do with the pressure, however I'm not sure where to start looking. I've had a look through the forum & Google and can't seem to find an answer, any help is massively appreciated. :)

Get the garage to check the belt timing..

Something has changed..

That is potentially the cause

I thought this could be the case as it was since the change was made, however I found it strange that the only time it wouldn't start was when I'd fuel up or until now just take the fuel cap off.

Sadly wasn't done at a garage but instead a close friend mechanic, will get them to have a look, thank you!

No problem.. its possible its a sensor..

But the fact it is only happening since the belt change.. makes you doubt the parts that were disturbed.. rather than an unrelated 'new' issue ;)

Good luck.. and do let us know what you find :)

Does it seem to crank on the starter ok.. not S l oo www ( slow)

These motors need to spin.. and a poor connection can create these problems.

It does make sense :( Left it a little while and she started up and a lot better than she did before, but still with it a little skip so I'm going with the timing might be off.
I'd have a look myself but I haven't got the tools, Tuesday is the soonest I can get it looked at so I'll post an update then. :)

Wouldn't be surprised "they" messed with the fuel piping ...

Sorry for being late with my reply, the timing was off by a 1&1/2 teeth which was sorted and now it starts smoothly every time :)

Took it for a long run and then the engine light came on toward the end, fun times
