Technical car broke

my car is buggered, when i started it this morning-there was a horrible rattle noise and then it just kept on cutting out-the noise it made was horribl and seemed to be coming from the drivers side

does anyone know or had this problem before?

Sorry to here about that Sam, but without looking at the car & going on your description of the noise coming from the right hand side, have a look at your alternator as its there, could be the bearings are gone and have seized up acusing the engine to not idle, I had this problem once many years ago on a 5 turbo & it did something similar, I got round it to get me home by spraying copious amounts of WD40 in to the alternator to free it up but the noise was terrible.

It's always a starting point as fault finding is all about elimination of whats not broken.
