Technical Cant tension tensioner as the bolt spins.

Are you talking about the cambelt tensiiner bearing seccentric mount for the timing belt ?

Just a thick washer on an 8 valve FIRE

Remove the washer and bearing.. check the thread

Torqued it up and the tensioner slipped damaged valves I suspect.

How do you replace the stud? Can you even replace it.

If its a stud.. then yes it is wound into the cylinder block.. so could be wound out and replaced.

However .. investigate any engine damage 1st

My tensioner nut was a fancy gold coloured thing with a coil inside and then a thread just in a small nut. I wondering if somebody had recoiled the nut! but somebody told me it was a fancy one use nut. I had used it about 3-4 times before finding the spring was doing something weird while torquing. I had no idea it was even inside the nut. So I was just very lucky!

It is a bit crazy the top part of the engine relies on this one nut. I replaced with an ordinary nut. I suppose it is worth trying to get a longer stud and putting a lock nut on it.......thinking about it now I might have used locktight....

You will need to check for bent valves..


Once you know its worth continuing.. YES its a STUD for a reason.. like the exhaust manifold studs.. they are designed to be easily replaced

Just replaced the head gasket -.-

Where can i buy the stud, do you have a link for one? How does it connect into the head?

A stud is a bolt that is threaded at both ends. Nothing complicated. you just have to get hold of it and rotate it out of the engine - usually done by putting two nuts on, locking them together and turning the inner one.

Dont over think it. A stud is a simple part.

Where to buy one? there are stockists of engineering supplies who I'm sure would match the old one if you took it in to them. Don't however, use one out of a cheap box of bits from the likes of Aldi/Lidl etc, it's going to be at least an 8.8 high tensile steel - see here: https://www.fastenright.com/specials/materials-and-finishes/high-tensile-steel but, unlike a bolt head which has the number on it, a stud won't be easy to establish what it is as it's not marked. Maybe the way to be sure is to order a new one from your Fiat Dealer, it won't be all that expensive compared to the peace of mind you'll get from knowing it's the right one.

All this talk of how to source and replace the tensioner stud but here (above) in the third post in this thread, you say you suspect valve damage? If this is the case your tensioner stud is going to be the least of your worries!

Thanks, yes he did, but I'm not clear as to whether that was because he'd been rectifying bent valves or just because the gasket had blown? It's a strange way to word it if he'd had the head off because of bent valves?
