Ahh! Bikes! The things that hold up traffic at rush hour on Hamble Lane, the B3397 when there's a perfectly good, £8 million cycle lane on the road [:(!][:(!][:(!][:(!][:(!]

I play a game - how close can you overtake a cyclist without knocking them off? It's quite fun! The worst thing is - they're not breaking the law by riding on the road - just pissing everybody off! [:(!]

It's funny how red lights don't apply to cyclists, or give way signs. Cyclists on my way to work play a rather dangerous lottery as they refuse to use the 10ft wide cycle path at either side of the road, opting to ride down the main road with traffic islands. It's not wide enough to get a bike and a car through at the same time. And it's a 40 limit. Eedjuts. It'll be the drivers fault if one of them gets hurt too.

Did I mention there's a lot of big lorries and tankers use the road too?

Rant over!!

Watch it you lot or I'll bash you one with my bicycle pump. Not every cyclist is a menace on the road!

As a CONSCIENTIOUS cyclist who has no choice right now, I am also pissed off with other cyclists who breach all the rules of the road. BUT I'm also pissed off with car drivers who push straight in front and pretend they haven't seen me. BTW, I wear a bright yellow jacket with plenty of reflective stripes, bright yellow helmet, and even the bike is yellow. Not just at night but in broad daylight. If they can't see me then it's time they bought themselves a white stick!

I have been knocked off my bike no less than FOUR TIMES over the many years I've been cycling by car drivers who think they own the road. I still have the pins in my left arm and leg to prove it :(

Admittedly three of them were Volvo drivers, and the other one a Merc, and was very glad that the Merc's nearside front door and wing were very badly dented when he smashed up my bike (and my body). What did he do? Pulled in to the side of the road without realising I was there. At 15 years of age (in 1968) helmets were not in general use then. And what did the f*cker do? He scarpered, didn't he? Unfortunately it happened in a shopping precinct so there were at least 10 witnesses.

Oh and it would also help if car drivers didn't use cycle tracks as somewhere to park their cars. :(

It also looks like I'll have to keep well away from Southampton if ever I have to use my bike in that part of the world ...

My rant over!!

as an ex cyclist i hear an awful lot of what steve is saying and fully agree.

before i got my sei i was a 5mile per day cyclist(2 miles of which was down perths dual carrigeway bypass), which where you are pete with your 10 foot cycle lanes might not be so bad, but here the only cycle lanes we have are 2 foot wide and just an excuse to make cyclists use the gutter, which i wont do, i don't expect cars to drive in the gutter why should cyclists? these cycle lanes, which are barely wider than my handle bars, are also an excuse for people to ignore the highway code (which specifically states cycles should be given the same amount of space that a car is when being over taken) and to squeeze past cyclists. then of course you have people who have parked in the cycle lanes, not easy to pull out o fthese lanes once you are in them.

end of the day my philosiphy pn cycling was simple.

i uprated my gearing on my mountain bike giving it the top gear of a speeder

i then went everywhere at 30mph (minimum)

for me cars never had to pass me, i overtook them [}:)]

Thanks Donz, me old mate. After that collision with the Merc it took me nearly 10 years to pluck up courage to get on my bike again. Even now, there's no way I'll cycle during rush hour.

I don't cycle by choice. Why? Then take a look:

It's 8 miles to work, time taken is as follows (my house to the building where I work):

In my car, 20 minutes
On my bike, 40-50 minutes (outward 40, return 50)
On public transport (4 miles by train, 4 by bus, 75-90 minutes if I'm lucky)
Walking, 2 hours (which I did once last January, never again, the blisters are still healing)

Now you can see what I prefer, but my poor Panda isn't up to it yet, if it ever will be :(

Yeah but does'nt your arse kill after getting back on a bike after umpteen years.
And don't you hate when your alongside a bus or lorry and they acclerate covering you in thick black smoke, end up coughing your guts up for the next mile or so. [xx(]

worst i had on my bike was taking a corner badly with poor brakes and ploughing into a barbed wire fence - nice set of scars up my back from that one.
