CANCHECK message on stereo - mk2 punto

I'm not too savy on ECU tech stuff so bare with me on this. I have an 03 punto mk2 (preface lift) which had an aftermarket stereo in it. I don't like it so I bought an OE head unit of eBay. Today I went to fit it and got the familiar CANCHECK message. Now I've don't a bit of research on here and found lots about CANCHECK but these relate to people who have had their original factory fitted unit display the message not one bought from another source. The usual remedy of disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it later hasn't worked so I'm now thinking it may be the unit. Further investigation has found that the mk2 (in particular my one) had a tape player fitted and the one I bought is a CD player which I certain came from a MK2b so my question is can a mk2b head unit be used in a mk2? Is the reason because although the wiring plugs look the same there maybe something different inside the unit?

EDIT may have found the problem

On the main ISO connector I have 15 pins yet the "new" stereo has a full set of 16 pins. Could this be what is causing the problem?
