Next project for me. I know there are loads of threads on this and having read them I plan to use hylomar in the grooves all round on the cover and engine except the end sections which I will substitute with silicone glue. Is this over the top and could cause leaking?

Glue..?? Why..??

An light coating on the rubber gasket is all you need..

And a light touch when tightening the screws ;)

Just something I saw on here and youtube about where the flat surface corners into the dome section over the cam at each end of the cover (where mine leaks badly!)

Which 1.2 do you have, the early one with the square pull off oil cap or the later one with the round screw off oil cap?
If you have the later one then I have a spare gasket that I can let you have, save trawling the web for one.

I don't think silicon glue is the right way unless it's high temp of course.

I must admit, I've wondered about the logic of the little blobs in the corners, it seems to be a 50/50 choice.

Mines the early square cap one but thanks for the offer! I'm gonna go the whole hog with hylomar and 300 degree silicone technicoll red (same colour as car!) in the corners. Can't hurt.

To clean what?

What state is the baffle plate in..??

I always used an old rag
And a coffee jar with petrol and old toothbrush
Cleaner rag to chase dry
Me too Charlie. Spray cans of brake/carb cleaner/degreaser seems to have replaced the "old ways" but at considerably greater expense? Oh, silly me, there's the reason why.

I've used genuine replacement gaskets from the main dealer and, much cheaper, generic ones supplied from my factor and Shop4parts. The genuine one (I've only ever bought the one genuine article) and the one from S4p felt "softer" and a bit more compliant but I easily achieved a satisfactory seal with the generic items. I always put a SMALL blob of my favourite Loctite SI 5980 sensor friendly sealant in the tight corners - as recommended by Fiat - but not on the flat surfaces. Don't overdo the sealant quantity, more is probably not better. If a lot of sealant is squeezed out of the way it may become detached and "swim around" inside the engine until it finds something to block up, like an oil feed or pickup screen.

One thing to maybe get your head round is that this gasket should not be considered a "lifetime fitment". They last well but do degrade with age. I would always fit a new one when doing a timing belt for instance. I think 4/5 years is a reasonable lifetime to expect on average but a lot of things can affect lifetime like if it's been removed and refitted a few times and how the car is used - ie lots of short journeys so many heat cycles or extended motorway running or maybe the engine got very hot sitting in a summer traffic jam or ???
