ALFA stands for Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili or the Lombardy Car Manufacturing Company. They were ALFA until 1917 when the company nearly went broke. The wealthy engineer and industrialist Nicola Romeo bought the firm and appended his name - hence Alfa Romeo. Romeo poached Enzo Ferrari (driver) and Vittorio Jano (engineer and designer) from Fiat and subsequently built a very successful car company. Alfa went from success to success until the works were heavily bombed during WWII, nearly bankrupting it again.
Ferrari organised the Scuderia Ferrari (Team Ferrari) who very successfully raced Alfas until he set up his own company after WWII. The rest, as they say, is history.
Jano designed the magnificent 6 and 8 cylinder Alfas in the 20s and 30s. These cars were highly prized around the world then and even today fetch large prices. After he left Alfa he worked for both Lancia and Ferrari. He co-designed the V6 Dino engine with Ferraris son Alfredino. Tragically, he committed suicide after the untimely death of his only son in 1965.
As usual, it it the characters that make the cars interesting,
