bt broadband- 1mb going to be 2mb

Best is still to come - BT are due to be releasing a product to the ISP's called Ma:LOL:SL which will radically alter broadband as we currently know it.

Basically what Ma:LOL:SL does is to sync your line to the fastest speed possible (i.e. if it supports 2Mb that's what you get) and this will mean that instead of subscribing to say a 1Mb connection you simply subscribe to ADSL.

I guess that the ISP's will alter their pricing model to a purely bandwidth based one so in plain terms the more you use, the more you pay.

I think it was NTL who kick all off this off....

They increased the 512kb (what i am on) to 700-ish . hopefully they upgrade it again to compete :D

Anyone know if cable broadband has the capacity to be faster than phone line style broadband?

Joe, AFAIK, NTL:

300kb (entry) to 1Mbit
1mbit to 2Mbit,
2mBit to 4,

NTL will have cheapest and quickest BB - cable is a much better technology that the old BT network hence it costs practiclaly zero for them to double the speed :)

No idea which can be fastest but do know that the costs of inc. speed on cable is 1/100 (or less) the cost of doing it for cable hence why NTL will have an entry rate of (i think) 17.99 (tell me if i am wrong) at 1Mbit.

All good news - I joined 1Meg Pipex just under a year ago, when it seemed to be the cheapest around for unlimited bandwidth....

...now the market has moved on, and I reckon I will shop around come end of contract.

Out of interest, anybody know of any decent bandwidth monitors, that will keep count of daily useage, so I can actually see what this machine uses per month [needs to also keep track if another user is logged into XP]. Cheers :)

David, yes, but NTL don't cap, they have recommended maxes, use over this constantly and expect a cap.
