I believe you need to wind the cylinder back in.. You can buy a tool to do this or you can fabricate your own from some steel tube.

If it's as I believe it is.. The caliper should look something like the attachment. Get some suitable pipe and cut out sections. Use a pair of mole grips to hold the pipe and screw the caliper in while pushing.

Yeah, you have to twist the cylinders as you push them back in. I had a hell of a job doing mine.

The problem is that the threaded handbrake screw arrangement stops you just pushing it straight back, so you need to push and twist. The threaded part attached to the piston is unfortunately also free to spin inside, so sometimes you turn and turn and it doesn't go anywhere.

I ended up hammering and twisting, using a piece of wood to stop any damage to the cylinder or caliper. Had to undo the bleed screw to allow the fluid out, too.

As Hellcat says, there is a proper tool available from good car bit shops.

Does anyone know of a cheap tool which actually fits the Fiat marea, i cannot find one that is for a fiat anywhere on the net!
Thanks

They're not cheap.. You're probably looking in excess of £100 for a single tool, and that might not fit the Fiat caliper. Then you need to buy the set of 'bits' which brings the total to over £200...

I think I'll submit to a decent Fiat specialist garage for the rear brakes. I expect I could have the discs and pads changed several times for the price of the tool.

Thanks, but i think i have misled you I have a 1.6sx weekend.

Also i have seen several tools for £20 and sets up to £200 does that help?

Thanks

i've had the same problem on many many cars, especially mk2 corsa sri's. i use a junior pipe wrench to turn, a rubber mallet to push and lots of persistance. oh and when i really get pist off i remove the caliper and get it in a bench clamp so it will stay still while i abuse it. that works wonders. as usual big tools and brute force are useful until you break something. then you hate yourself.

DOH I can now reveal having replaced my pads and discs that the Fiat Marea 1.6sx has STANDARD push calipers. Did it with a g cramp!

Just for information.

Thanks for the help!

I was so worried!
