My car has suddenly developed a temperature. The guage reaches the red after about 15 mins, and stays there! I have recently topped up the coolant, but this has had no effect. Does anyone have any ideas as where to look next?

Not definate but i had this exact problem on my old car (which wasnt a fiat) and it was just the thermostat that needed replacing. An easy way to check it is to remove it and boil it in a pan of water by suspending it from a wire so it doesnt touch the pan but is in the water and after the water gets to nearly boiling point it should pop open. If it doesnt then its screwed and you need a new one. There about £3 - £4.

Tested thermostat housing (1.8HLX engine)- thermostat opened ok - Not a huge amount, but then again, I'm not sure how much it is supposed to open. Any other ideas?

Fan not kicking in as far as I'm aware (unless it's a very quiet fan!!)

If it's not losing coolant then you have an air lock by the sounds of it. You'll need to bleed the system to get rid of the lock and quickly before it takes the head gasket out!

I was gonna say that ;)

So I'm trying to bleed the system - Job 1 - locate bleed screws!
My trusty Haynes manual guides me to the radiator - fair enough, got that. But then I should find some on the pipes leading to the heater - But I don't seem to have them! Any ideas anyone? Remember, I have a 1.8!)

I bled the system and re-filled slowly - still no joy. Can't seem to find the problem. All the pipes get hot, the fan works ok. Only other sympton is no heat from the heaters in the car. Could this be where I have a blockage?
