Below is a guide to some of the warning lights on the Bravo and possible causes/ solutions. Hopefully it may be of use to someone. (if not simply making it easier for people to show what warning light they have when asking questions)
The bellow information is not a substitute to the information provided in the owners manual. Information in the owners manual should be followed and understood, and any contradictions in the below guide should be ignored.
When you turn the ignition to the MAR position, this light should come on and then go off after a few seconds. This is the ABS system performing a "self test" If the light illuminates whilst driving, it is indicating a fault in the ABS system. Care should be taken as your breaking efficiency may be severely reduced and ABS may not be operational.
This light should appear when the key is turned to MAR, and then go out a few seconds later. This is the Air-bag system performing a "self test". If the light illuminates whilst driving, it is indicating a fault in the air-bag system. Care should be taken and you should contact Fiat as soon as possible. It is not possible to re-set the "air bag failure" light with DIY type EOBD scanners. Its best to be put on fiat examiner so that the system can be fully checked. After all it may be the onyl thing that stops you headbutting the steering wheel at 50mph one day!
If the above two lights illuminate together, this is indicating a fault in the EBD or "Electronic Brake force Distribution" system. Care should be taken, as breaking efficeincy may be dramatically reduced and the potential for the rear wheels to lock up is greatly increased.
The above light refers to the EOBD system or "Engine On Board Diagnostics". The EOBD continuously monitors many of the sensors on the vehicle and ensures that they stay within set parameters. If the light is on steadily whilst driving, it is indicating that it has detected a fault. Sometimes, it may be accompanied by a message on the display which will give more information on what the fault is. Failing this, the best way to diagnose the fault is to have the fault codes read from the ECU by having the car hooked up to diagnostics equipment. The Bravo is EOBD11 compatabale, meaning that most DIY diagnostic tools will bea ble to read the code that is stored in the ECU.
If the light is flashing whilst driving, this is indicating a possible misfire of fueling/combustion problem which may result in catalitc converter damage. This is caused by unburnt fuel entering the catalytic converter. In this case, driving should be kept to a minimum, and revs kept low until the problem is rectified.
The above symbol represnts a fualt in the Electronic Power Steering System or EPS. If the light illuminates whilst driving, you may experience a loss of power assistance and as such, the steering will feel heavier. it is however, still possible to steer as there is a mechanicla link to the wheels meaning that should the system fail, you will not be left without steering.
The above light indicates the operation of the ESP or "Electronic Stability Programme" If the light remains on constantly whilst driving, then it indicates a fault in the ESP system. Care should be taken as the car may handle differently to what you are used to under harsh breaking/cornering/accelerarion.
The ESP system incorporates ASR, which is "Anti Slip Regualtion". This is also known as traction control. When Either or both of the ASR/ESP systems are activated, the above light will flash temporarily.
The above light is only relevant to the Diesel Bravos. When the key is turned to MAR, the light will come on untill the glow plugs reach a set temperature. The light will then go out and at this point the engine should be started. If the light flashes or remains lit once the engine is on, this is indicating a fault in the pre-heating system. Normally this is caused by one or more defective glow plugs. A simple test with a multi-meter set to ohms will help you determin which if any of the glow plugs are at fault.
The above light indicates that the handbreak is on. If the light illuminates when the handbreak is off, then this indicates that the break fluid may be low. In this case, you should stop immediately and check your break fluid level.
Other causes of the above light include a faulty handbreak switch and faulty break fluid level switch.
The above light indicates low engine oil pressure. The light should remain on when the key is at MAR, but go out quickly once the engine has started. If the light illuminates whilst driving, stop the engine as soon as possible to avoid potentially severe engine damage.
The above light is relevant to Bravos fitted with TPMS or "Tyre Pressure Monitoring System" The system constantly monitors tyre pressures when the ignition is on. If the symbol illuminates with the wording "Low tyre pressure" it is indicating that one or more tyres have dangerously low pressure. If the symbol illuminates with the wording "Check tyre Pressure" the system is indicating that one or more of the tyres are flat. If the symbol illuminates with the wording "tyre pressure unsuitable for speed", the TPMS is indicating that the tyre pressure is not sufficient for the speed that the vehicle is travelling at.
The above light is indicating that the front passenger airbag and side airbag are deactivated. This function should be used when a baby seat is positioned on the front seat. The light should remain on whilst driving to indicate that the airbag is deactivated. The drives airbags are unaffected.
The above light indicates that the front brake pads are dangerously low. It should be noted, that the rear pads/shoes do not have wear sensors, and therefore should also be checked frequnetly. If the light illuminates, the front brake pads should be changed as soon as possible.
The above light indicates one of three things. Firstly, when the key is placed in the ignition, an aerial around the ignition barrel reads the code on the chip inside the key. If the codes match, the immobiliser will be switched off. This will be indicated by the EOBD and above light going out.
Secondly, if the light remains on constantly, it is indicating a fault in the alarm system. You should check that all doors including the boot and bonnet are shut correctly.
Thirdly, should someone attempt to break into the car or disable the system, the light will illuminate.
If the above light illuminates whilst driving, it is indicating that the cooling system is overheating. If this occurs. you should stop the car and switch off the engine immediately to avoid potentially serious engine damage. You should check the coolant level in the coolant reservoir. HOWEVER, be aware that when hot, the system is pressurised and you should therefore allow it to cool for a while before removing the expansion cap. When removing the cap, it should be done slowly, allwing the excess pressure to escape slowly. Failure to do this could result in severe burns.
The above light indicates a fault in the external lighting system. The system monitors the following bulbs:
Side lights
Tail lights
Brake lights
Rear fog light
Indicators
Number plate lights
Normally the warning light will indicate the one or more of the above bulbs have blow. HOWEVER, the light can also be triggered by incorrect bulbs being used. For example a bulb of the wrong wattage or voltage. LED lights that are not fitted with an inline resistor can also cause the warning light to illuminate.
The above warning light indicates one or more of several faults. Normally a message will be displayed along with the warning light to identify what the fault is. They are as Follows:
1. Inertial Fuel Cut off switch activated - This is a safety device that cuts off the fuel supply to the engine in the event of an accident. It can be re-set by pressing the Fuel cut off re-set button. The fuel cut off is activated by "inertia" and it is sometimes possible for it to be accidentally activated if hitting a large pot hole etc. In this case simply pressing the re-set button should suffice.
2.Engine oil pressure sensor failure - A self test is performed of the engine oil pressure sensor. If it falls outside of the set parameters, the light will b illuminated.
3.Twilight sensor failure - This is the sensor that activates the headlights automatically. The system performs a self test of the sensor. Should it fall outside parameters, the warning light will illumniate. The headlights will still function in the conventional way.
4.Rain sensor failure - As above, but with regards to Bravos fitted with automatic windscreen wipers.
5.Parking sensor failure - As above but with regurds to Bravos fitted with parking sensors.
6.TPMS or "Tyre Pressure Monitoring System Failure" - This indicates a fualt in the TPMS. This may be caused by a faulty sensor. However, the light will illuminate if a wheel without a TPMS sensor is fitted.
The above light is indicating a fault in the charging system. If it illuminates whilst the engine is running, it is indicating that the battery is not charging correctly. You should check all connections to the battery and alternator. Then, with a multimeter and then engine running, place the + probe on the + terminal of the battery, and the - probe on the - terminal of the battery. You should see a voltage of around 13.5v to 14.7v Much higher or lower and it indicates that your alternator is not working properly and should be reconditioned or replaced.
Indicates low engine oil level. Should it illuminate whilst driving, you should stop immediately and check the oil level and top up where necessary before continuing.
