General Brava Engine swap

Hi all, i have recently acquired a 1.6 sx brava with a blown engine (mark 1) if a replace the engine with another 1.6 sx (mark 1) will i need to change the ecu and will i need to get another mot?

no need for an ecu change, just disconnect everything (wiring, cables, pipes), take gearbox off, remove engine, fit new engine, attach gearbox, reconnect everything. its really easy when you do a like for like swap.

you'll need to get the engine number changed on the V5 (log book), but your MOT is still valid.

as Jug said, mk1 into a mk1 is a doddle

mk2 into a mk1 on the other hand is a different situation. been there and done that, and after Fiat told me it couldnt be done i said ******** to them and did it, but its wasnt a staright swap by any means

the crank sensor on a mk2 is on the crank wheel, wereas its on the cam pulleys on a mk1... fiddely kob to say that least plus then you have to retime it (even though we made locking tools ourselves its still best to double check everything...)

you're officially looking for a mk1 1.6 16v engine (sx is not important, sx/hlx/elx is same engine)

it doesn't matter if it is from a manual or auto, but it must have a metal upper inlet manifold.

should cost you £75 for the engine.

Where? The cheapest quote ive got so far is £175 otherwise average is between £200 and £250

scrapyards, they'll usually remove the engine for a small fee as well, but you'll probably need to collect it (a van and a small pallet and trolley are recommended) unless you're lucky enough to find somewhere that can deliver.

The scrappies by me are expensive then cos the one place quoted £200 the other place quoted £300 but i clinked on the findanengine link at the top and the cheapest i got from them was £175 with vat and delivery

you dont want to look online, you need someone local so you can shout at them when the engine dies after 1 week.

call 20 scrapyards and then you'll have a good idea of what price you're looking at. the 1.6 bravo brava marea is a very common engine and easy to find, its not like you're after a nearly new BMW engine.

i havent bought an engine since 2003 so maybe things have changed, or maybe you just live in the wrong area, north east is cheap.

Have you hunted through the Yellow Pages/ Yell.com for a list of local places bandido? Most places you can also haggle some, especially if they have no idea what it's worth. Good luck
