Hi All,

wondered if anyone can help.

went to change the front brake pads today as a grinding noise started to occur every time i used the brakes. 2 things then happened:

1 - i couldn't pull the clip out of the caliper pin as the pin must have rotated so the ends of pin were sticking out - i could push them thru - i presume there isnt enough room. so i tried to rotate the pin but couldn't get any grip with the pliers so had to give up.

the second thing is that as i was driving home the grinding got worse and you could hear the rotor rubbing at low speeds - think it might have warped slightly.

when i turn a corner at low speeds the grinding increases/starts even when i havent touched the brake.

any ideas/advice?

cheers

Hi,

I had the same problem took my tyre of and found that my outside pad on the nearside was down to the metal and the heat from the friction between the disc and pad was causing the pad to weld itself to the disc so the pad never properly stopped touching the disc. (grinding noise all the time even when driving slowly).

To take the pin out just ramp a small flat head screwdriver into it and hook it behind the pin then keep pulling and it should flick out or bend it until it finally comes out (if bent you can easily straighten with a hammer and pliers).

Once the locking pin is out you need to push through the caliper pin do this by pushing the caliper in with 1 hand to free the tension of the pin and using a narrow tool (pin punch) to push the pin out with the other hand.

Once the pin is out lift open the caliper and check your pads, iif the pad is down to metal i would replace the disc aswel because my had warped because of the heat caused when metals touch.

Little tip when putting new pads or disc onto your Punto open the BRAKE FLUID RESOVIOUR CAP inside your bonnet (where you put brake fluid into) and push back the caliper piston with big pilers otherwise the new pads or dics wont fit. Make sure when pushing back that your brake fluid doesnt come out of the resovouir.

Hope this helps worked for me by the way best of replacing both sides pads and discs if thats the problem.

And check the condition of your brakes more regularly... gobsmacking that some people wait for noises that shouldnt happen before they take care of things...

I had just bought my PUNTO when i heard my noise only 2 days old i was going to check it over at the weekend anyway and give it a good clean and service but i heard the niose on a Wednesday so decided to take a day of work to sort it. I do normally check my brakes and all fluid levels and service it often. Its just because I had just bought it and had no time spare because of work.

Wasnt "aimed" at anyone really, more a general comment. Its unbelievable how many silly faults and sometimes dangerous ones happen through neglect, Punto's seem to be particularly affected because of the low cost and used buyer profiles for the £500 - £1,000 bracket.
