Morning. Have a 2008 1.3TD which is very reliable. However, both brake lights come on with the ignition and won't go off- and clearly won't show when I am slowing down! Changed all the bulbs and looked closely at electrical connection but I am untrained in these matters and would appreciate any suggestions for remedy before I pay a dealer £54 just for having a look.

If the Panda is the same as the 500, then it's likely to be the brake light switch, having come out of its mounting bracket? I had this happen on our 500. On the 500 the brake light switch is located in the passenger footwell where a bar actuates the brake master cylinder from the pedal in the drivers footwell (as a consequence from the LHD to RHD alterations). A passenger can easily dislodge the brake light switch if the stretch their feet under the dashboard in early 500s. Have a look high up in the passenger footwell and see if there are any obviously loose or dangling wires - on our 500 I actually found the parts of the brake light switch rolling around loose in the footwell and clipped it all back together.

Sorry to have caused confusion.
My LHD has it on the right side (which is left of course;)) near the pedal. To have it on the left side as well in a RHD Panda sounds both logical and illogical at the same time. But of course masterbrakecilinder and brakebooster are still left on RHD Panda's.

I had exactly this issue, tempoarily fixed with a shot of WD40 - use the tube for accuracy - Then fixed simply by replacing the brake light switch, a white and black plastic gizmo, spring loaded to bear against and beneath the brake pedal stalk, get down in the footwell with a torch to see it, it is a simple push twist bayonet fitting to release, and then unplug, when you fit the new one, ( Panuts from a dealer, less from Fleanbay), it self adjusts, so don't 'fiddle' with it before installing it. Best regards, DB

Horror Price!!! Try Fleabay.

Here's a linky to the thread on the 500 forum showing my picture of where the brake light switch goes and what it looks like when back together. Interestingly on the 500s this causes the ecu to cause hesitancy in accelerating due to it believing that brakes are applied, and this was what alerted me to the problem!

Many thanks all. Stu0710 has it right: I looked in the passenger footwell and the white brake light switch connector was dislodged from its mounting ( Bit of a fib- got someone to do it for me!!). Reconnected and all lights in working order. Thanks for all replies.
