Before anybody says, I know DOT5.1 isn't silicone, had a mind spaz, I'm talking about DOT5.1, not DOT5 (which IS silicone) here

Just wondering who (if anybody) has made the change to DOT5.1 brake fluid & if they really noticed much difference. .

I like to change the fluid on my cars every 18months or so, after all, it's the brakes.

Did a little reading around this a few years ago, and I think 5.1 is great if you are driving a 10/10's and keeping the brakes and fluid temps high, but slightly less affective that 4 Dot in every day use where brakes are used occasionally to slow for traffic lights etc. So doubt for a 1.2 you'd see any benefit except on track days

Yes, and the difference is dramatic. I also combined it with new discs and pads so there was an effect from that as well. Firmer pedal, more bite. I can squeeze the brakes until the pads catch fire now :)

If you're in London area and you fancy a spin in mine let me know. I'll be at the ace cafe tonight as well. If you're there we can go for a spin.

I use American Oils R600+ in the VXR's AP Racing Brakes (which is DOT4 Racing Fluid)

I'm thinking about putting this in the Fiat to keep pressure firm, but probably massive overkill as they wont get anywhere near the heat in the VXR...

Probably go for the 5.1 Fast Road use product instead

Anyways, very good fluid and recommended to me by the 888 Race Team (Ex-Vauxhall BTCC)

My Ferodo DS2500 Pads turned up yesterday so will fit them at the weekend and let you know how I get on with them... it'll stop all that 'catching fire' nonsense

All that for a 1.2, good effort, a man after my own heart.

P.S. How much were the pads & where did you get them? Not that I'd buy any for the 'ring trip you understand, I'm only going for a bit of fun.

I enjoy making slow cars go fast, its takes more skill than making fast cars go fast :D

Best get your car ready for the Nurburgring :D - I love that place its magical :D

Anyways here you go, I did a thread on it.. all details on the link below

That was my reasoning behind my old race car when I built it, std engine, work on brakes, chassis, weight, gearbox.
Exactly

Good fun isnt it :)

I cause havoc on the Nurburgring in the Vectra VXR as people just dont rate it as a fast car... untill they catch up with me in the car park after the lap session and then want to know all about it lol :D (Especially Subaru drivers :p)

I've got a set of them on shelf. For the spa/ring trip I'm fitting new EBC grooved and dimpled discs, the 2500 pads, fitting my fog light surround/flexi hose brake cooling idea and putting the stainless steel hoses on, flushing the whole thing out with fresh 5.1. I reckon this will be enough to pop my eyes out when I stand on the brakes :)

lol.. sounds good.

Let me know how you get on with the EBC discs :) ... and the brake cooling ducts (got these on the VXR from the foglight housings) :yum:

I've got some ebc discs on now, they're better than standard. But i'm using greenstuff pads. Which are poo.

Re: Silicone Brake Fluid (Dot 5.1)

When I was at the Nurburgring last, I found it difficult to monitor the tyre pressures around the circuit (as each lap is 13 miles long)... so I fitted a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System which also tells me the air temperature inside the tyres. (as heat buildup isnt necessarily even on both sides of the car)

http://www.rockshore.uk.com/tpms---tyresure-tyre-pressure-monitoring-system-1689-p.asp

Not as accurate as tyre probes or surface temperature guages, but it at least gives you an idea.

You can also set alarms (audiable and graphic) when they get to hot (or too cold) or pressures fall out of range (high or low) :)

Got this same system fitted to the Fiat 500 now as well :D - so I can see what the maximum pressures and temperatures are during the lap and adjust accordingly for the next lap :D

And just for safety reasons...

Interesting. I've never dnoe anything more than inflate the tyres, then check again after a few laps. No real data acquisition of any kind. Also I'm lazy and find that sticking 34psi into a set of R888's makes for a lively run around the 'ring :)

First person to fill the tyres with nitrogen on their 1.2, gets some kind of prize. Not decided what yet though. :chin:
Might be getting some Michelin tyres from Costco for the wifes car. If I was to destroke the engine so it was a 1.2 would I win said prize?
