Seicento Sporting 1.1 2002. Intermittent binding on both rear brakes.

Both wheels get very hot to touch. Then once they have cooled down for 20 mins I can test the brakes as much as I like on longer journeys and no binding.

The next day it's fine in the morning and then in the afternoon I take it for a run before work, again no problem. Parked up for two hours come out to go home and it will start binding again.

I repeat the above and all it fine again. It's done the exact same thing for two days in a row but was fine on testing it as above afterwards..

What can be causing this strange intermittent problem?

Any help with this would be appreciated as I need the car for work.

Thanks

wheb was the last rear brake rebuild? As usual I'd suspect the handbrake actuator/elbows are starting to seize so a strip down, grease or replacement is in order

Or since it's a sei one or both of the cables have seized

Thanks for a quick reply.

What I'm confused about is that they both get very hot at the same time and at the same rate.

Its like having the handbrake on. But once they cool down a bit they are fine for the rest of the day and the next morning driving to and from work. I do shift work. Then I will jump in the car to drive home in the afternoon and they will bind again on the way home. Oddly enough this has only happened in the afternoon on both days.

This has only just started to happen and it is very intermittent. I would have expected that once they started to bind they would over heat all of the time but this is not the case.

I did a brake rebuild about 6 months ago. That included a good clean and copper slip an all linkages etc.

Are there 2 handbrake cables right through to the back or one cable that joins to 2 cable in a y shape from the handbrake lever in the car?

Thanks

The rear cables are one long cable connected from brake to brake with a horse shoe type thing connecting them to the cable from the handbrake lever

Yes I did. Picked them up and they couldn't guarantee they would fit.
Guess the next job is to strip it down and measure up and hope for the best.

If I trolley jack of each side up is it ok to support the whole back of the car off the ground with the axle stands placed under the back axle?

Thanks for replying

If you have time, run some oil through the handbrake cable until it drips out the other end.
Makes it so smooth and far less likely to seize again.

Thanks for replying so fast.

Once I measured up to make sure the part is correct I will oil the cable. It sounds like it would be time well spent. I'm off to work shortly and will start to dismantle later after my shift.

Thanks Dave and everyone else for all your help and advice.

Spot on The Black Box. (y)

Both sides of the outer cable near the rear drums were rusted through and causing both sides to intermittently bind and then not bind.

I have now replaced with new the handbrake cable and the shoes and all is well.

Thank you and another thanks to all that helped. (y)
