About to service me 1.8, I need some new plugs and was always happy with Bosch Super 4's in me old Tipo - where can I get some from, how much, and do they work well in the 1.8?

Cheers

I won't use anything else :)

But I do change them every year. 2 years is TOOOO long.

I have these and you can tell there is an improvement,

DONT WORK FOR THE CO-OP THEY DONT PAY PERIOD!

Bosch super 4

I bought a set for my 1.6sx £18.99 delivered, think this is reasonable. Contacted [email protected] payed throught paypal, they were delivered 2 days later. Drop them an email give make model and year of car and there'll let you know.

Re: Bosch super 4

put them in my 1.4

No detectable difference, but the others weren't knackered, i just changed them because i was already doing the oiland filter on it, so spent another £20 while i was at it. wont do any harm though.

Re: Bosch super 4

Sweet. Will get some tomorrow, was going to change my stat tomorrow but unfortunately I got to work in the morning :(

The joys of doing out-of-hours support :(

don't hate me

Now, don't hate me.

My independant fiat specialist in Hull says that bosch super 4's never offered him any extra performance and would always need replacing every six months. He mentioned something about fiat/italian engines not liking them.

He races fiat's and does them up etc, been working with them for 20 odd years.

He swears by NGK spark plugs, last long and perform well.

Personally, i have never had the spark plugs in my car so i am not offering an opinion myself, i am merely passing on his opinion.

Re: don't hate me

Racing puts very different stresses on the plug ;)

No plug can ever give you 'extra' performance but a bad plug will give you less.

As I said, they do need changing every year, but then so do the Fiat ones.

I've tried NGK in the 1.6 and they worked fine.

Re: don't hate me

See if you can track down some NGK Iridiums. Last time I bought a set they were ~ £15.

Starts up like nothing else and seems to make the right pedal a little more responsive.

Re: don't hate me

Yeah, might see if I can get some of them. To be honest, the Super 4 bit struck me as a gimmick - electricity always takes the path of least resistance, so as the resistance will be constant to each of the 4 electrodes, surely only 1 electrode is ever going to work, making the other 3 redundant?

Anyways, does anyone know of a place that sells those NGK iridiums? Can find the standard ones, but not those.

Thanks all

Re: don't hate me

the only reason the other 3 electrodes are there is to allow an increase in working life of the plug.
That's all there is to it.

No other benefit even though they may want to say otherwise.

You either put more electrodes or make the metal out of something more durable.

Re: don't hate me

wrong :)

Super 4 have 4 electrodes anyway ;)

The possition of the electrode determines the direction of the first flame front, with normal plugs the flame front initially travels out sideways along the cylinder roof, with multi electrode plugs it initially travels downwards into the cylinder

They were developed for aircraft engines in the last 1930s.

The metal is worn away by the temperature of combustion so all the electrodes wear at about the same rate.

Re: don't hate me

So, would the direction of the flame make any real difference?

Re: don't hate me

Tom,

Your reply certainly makes sense.
Getting the flame front to travel downwards is important for what? Better performance or emissions?

P.S
Should I get rid of my Asda engine guide?

Re: don't hate me

Both really. Its what splitfire tried to do with their split electrode plug, its just everyone else overtook them.

On Spitfires etc.. they used to hand tune each plug to fire on all the electrodes, I knew a guy who used to do this during the war. But the Merlin/Griffon engine used a magneto rather than a coil and they produce far bigger sparks.

Spark erosion is a problem and 4 electrodes does help a bit but the combustion heat is still the main killer.
